# The detaining of undocumented foreigners during the asylum application processes, is not unlawful
# The ANC in Gauteng says there is a serious misunderstanding of what cadre deployment is
# And Cricket: There is improvement from the Proteas on day one of the second Test against New Zealand
# The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg clarified that detaining undocumented individuals during asylum application processes, isn’t inherently unlawful. This ruling responds to Ethiopian nationals seeking to prevent detention, prosecution, or deportation until their refugee status is determined. They argue that detention during asylum processes was illegal. The court clarified that release is not automatic for asylum seekers who entered the country illegally.
# The ANC in Gauteng says the Constitutional Court ruling on the party’s cadre deployment records is a shallow victory for the DA. The court has given the ruling party five days to hand over the records of its cadre deployment committee since January first 2013, when president Cyril Ramaphosa became chairperson. ANC Gauteng chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi, says the party does not deploy any member who is not qualified for the job, adding that there is a serious misunderstanding of what cadre deployment is:
# The DA in Gauteng is urging MEC of Social Development, Mbali Hlophe, to ensure that service delivery to residents does not deteriorate due to the suspension of 13 senior officials. The suspension of the officials is related to an investigation into the department’s funding of non-profit organisations. The DA’s, Refiloe Nt’sekhe, says the MEC should have been transparent about this decision to suspend the officials, adding that several indicators already point to a crisis in the department:
# The South African Wind Energy Association has welcomed the deadline extension for comments on the draft Integrated Resource Plan to the 23rd of next month. The IRP is an electricity generation plan that seeks to ensure the security of electricity supply. The association’s CEO, Niveshen Govender, says the extension offers the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy an opportunity to incorporate president Cyril Ramaphosa’s vision for more renewable energy, which will create a more robust, aggressive and inspiring IRP that prioritises a secure supply of electricity.
# Cricket: Proteas batter, David Bedingham, says it was important for the team to show a fight from the onset in the second Test against New Zealand. South Africa chose to bat first with several batters getting a start but falling in their 20’s or 30’s. At stumps on day one of the second Test, the visitors had 220 for six, with Ruan de Swardt unbeaten on 55 and Shaun von Berg on 34. Bedingham says they could have done better:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-83-cents and the euro at 20-rand-28-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-82-cents and Bitcoin trades at 50-thousand-65-dollars-39-cents.
