# We begin with Soccer: Hosts Ivory Coast came from behind to beat Nigeria two-one and win the Africa Cup of Nations for the third time. William Troost-Ekong had put Nigeria ahead seven minutes before the end of the first half. Franck Kessie scored the equaliser in the 62nd minute. Former West Ham strike, Sebastien Haller, who battled back from being diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2022, scored the winner in the 81st minute. Ivory Coast becomes the first tournament host to triumph since Egypt lifted the trophy in 2006.
And in more Soccer news, Hugo Broos says he remains committed to staying on as Bafana Bafana coach. He has been linked to the vacant national coaching jobs for Tunisia and Algeria. The 71-year-old led South Africa to a third-place finish in the Africa Cup of Nations. Broos, whose contract expires in June 2026, says the only way he will leave is if the South African Football Association fires him:
# Cricket: Australia defeated India by 79 runs to win the Under-19 Men’s World Cup for the fourth time in Benoni. Harjas Singh top-scored with 55 as Australia posted 253 for seven from their 50 overs, the highest-ever total in an Under 19 World Cup final. In reply, Mahli Beardman and Raf Macmillan took three wickets each, as India was dismissed for 174. Meanwhile, South Africa’s fast bowler Kwena Maphaka was named player of the tournament after he picked up 21 wickets.
# And finally: American Football: The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime in Las Vegas, to win back-to-back Super Bowls and their third in five years. Patrick Mahomes’ touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman in overtime sealed the victory for the Chiefs, making them the first team to win back-to-back championships in 20 years. Mahomes, who was named Most Valuable Player, says this was the greatest run to a Super Bowl win in his career:
