# The DA in Gauteng says it is concerning that Finance MEC, Jacob Mamabolo, has again missed another deadline to announce exactly how the province will be paying for its portion of the e-toll debt. Over the past few years, authorities have missed all of the deadlines for the scheme to be scrapped. Gauteng’s portion of the e-toll debt is currently 12.9-billion-rand. The DA’s, Fred Nel, says it is unacceptable that residents are still being billed for an unwanted system:

# Retired chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng says not even death threats will stand in his way of becoming president of South Africa one day. He started speaking publicly about his aspirations to become president in 2022, saying he believed it was his calling. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Mogoeng says there have been numerous attempts to eliminate him in the past two years:

# The Rwanda Bill is fundamentally incompatible with Britain’s human rights obligations and places it in breach of international law. This is according to a damning UK parliamentary report by the Joint Committee on Human Rights. The bill aims to counter last year’s judgment of the Supreme Court, which found Rwanda was not a safe country to which UK asylum seekers could be forcibly removed. The report states that the bill’s near-total exclusion of judicial scrutiny seeks to undermine the constitutional role of the domestic courts in holding the executive to account.

# Soccer: Hugo Broos says he remains committed to staying on as Bafana Bafana coach. He has been linked to the vacant national coaching jobs for Tunisia and Algeria. The 71-year-old led South Africa to a third-place finish in the Africa Cup of Nations, which was won by hosts Ivory Coast. Broos, whose contract expires in June 2026, says the only way he will leave is if the South African Football Association fires him:

# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-99-cents and the euro at 20-rand-48-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-99-cents and Bitcoin trades at 48-thousand-316-dollars-62-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-and-26-dollars-52-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 81-dollars-58-cents a barrel.

# And finally: Prince William’s Earthshot charity will host its awards ceremony in Cape Town this November, celebrating fifteen global environmental solutions. The Earthshot Prize of 24-million-rand aims to reduce carbon emissions by over 40-percent by 2030 and protect 30-percent of nature. No specific dates have been announced, and it’s unclear if Prince William or Kate Middleton will attend. Earthshot Prize CEO Hannah Jones emphasises the importance of addressing environmental challenges in the Earthshot Decade.
