# President Cyril Ramaphosa says with South Africa fast becoming an increasingly attractive destination for industries, attracting more skilled workers is vital. Last week, the Department of Home Affairs published for public comment draft amendments to the Immigration Regulations, dealing with remote working and critical skills visas. In his weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa says to succeed in an ever-changing global economy, the country needs far more people with the right skills. He adds that government is committed to attracting skills that meet the demands of a modern, inclusive and growing economy.
# Retired chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng says not even death threats will stand in his way of becoming president of South Africa one day. He started speaking publicly about his aspirations to become president in 2022, saying he believed it was his calling. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Mogoeng says there have been numerous attempts to eliminate him in the past two years:
# Three people have died in a fire in Fisantekraal, northeast of Durbanville, in the early hours of this morning. City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service’s spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, says an emergency call was received of a structure alight in Saartjie Baartman Street just before 1am this morning. He says a man sustained 30-percent burn wounds and was treated and transported to a nearby hospital:
# The Rwanda Bill is fundamentally incompatible with Britain’s human rights obligations and places it in breach of international law. This is according to a damning UK parliamentary report by the Joint Committee on Human Rights. The bill aims to counter last year’s judgment of the Supreme Court, which found Rwanda was not a safe country to which UK asylum seekers could be forcibly removed. The report states that the bill’s near-total exclusion of judicial scrutiny seeks to undermine the constitutional role of the domestic courts in holding the executive to account.
# American Football: The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime in Las Vegas, to win back-to-back Super Bowls and their third in five years. Patrick Mahomes’ touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman in overtime sealed the victory for the Chiefs, making them the first team to win back-to-back championships in 20 years. Mahomes, who was named Most Valuable Player, says this was the greatest run to a Super Bowl win in his career:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 19-rand-2-cents and the euro at 20-rand-53-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-4-cents and Bitcoin trades at 48-thousand-227-dollars-2-cents.
