# Eskom faces a generation capacity shortage and implements Stage 6 indefinitely
# The Competition Commission launches an inquiry into the poultry industry
# And Soccer: It’s Bronze for Bafana in the Africa Cup of Nations
# Eskom has announced that it is grappling with insufficient generation capacity as ten units are offline due to boiler tube leaks. Spokesperson Daphne Mokoena confirms the setback, leading to the indefinite implementation of Stage 6. Delays in returning three units from planned maintenance exacerbate the situation, increasing reliance on emergency reserves. Mokoena stresses the urgent need to replenish reserves and address inadequate generation capacity:
# The Competition Commission invites public participation in a market inquiry into the poultry industry value chain. The commission has reason to believe there are features in the poultry market that may impede, distort, or restrict competition. Stakeholders are urged to submit written feedback on draft terms of reference by March 8. Chief Economist James Hodge has emphasised the importance of market fairness, particularly in a sector vital for protein supply for the majority of South Africans, and particularly low-income households
# The City of Johannesburg and City Manager Floyd Brink were held in contempt of court for breaching an order regarding an inflated water bill dispute with a business. The City allegedly disconnected the business’ water supply in contravention of a prior ruling over the dispute dating back to 2022. Although the water was later reconnected after a ten-day interruption, the business suffered substantial setbacks. Gauteng High Court judge Leonard Twala imposed a 30-day imprisonment on Brink, suspended for a year on set conditions.
# President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed condolences on behalf of South Africans, following the passing of former Namibian President Hage Geingob. Speaking in Windhoek, Ramaphosa lauded Geingob’s efforts to unite Namibians and his commitment to ethical principles. Ramaphosa acknowledges Geingob’s vision for stronger Namibia-South Africa relations:
# And Soccer: Bafana Bafana won the third place play-off in the Africa Cup of Nations when they beat the Democratic Republic of Congo six-five on penalties. The score was goalless after full time and a penalty shoot-out followed after no extra-time was allowed. Teboho Mokoena missed Bafana’s first penalty, but captain Ronwen Williams saved two penalties. The AFCON final will be played at ten o’clock tonight between Nigeria and Ivory Coast.
