Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with Olympics: Team South Africa added two more medals to their haul at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, with the first gold medal coming courtesy of rower Callum Dreyer and a silver medal thanks to swimmer Chanel Veldsman. Sixteen-year-old Dreyer sealed gold by defeating Spain’s Diego Molina Martinez in the final, with Hungary’s Adam Moor claiming bronze. Veldsman won silver in the women’s 100-metres breaststroke. South Africa’s total medal tally now stands at four: one gold, two silver and one bronze.
# Athletics: Renowned coach and administrator Jean Verster will be Athletics South Africa’s acting president until a council meeting on the 28th of this month. This follows the firing of James Moloi after an independent disciplinary inquiry linked to serious financial misconduct and misuse of a corporate credit card. South Africa’s designated representative at World Athletics, Zakhele Dlamini, instructed ASA’s board to appoint an acting president. This is part of ongoing efforts to address internal governance challenges and advance compliance with World Athletics’ governance directives.
# Rugby: Springbok defence coach Jerry Flannery insists Italy remains a highly dangerous opponent despite missing several key players through injury for Saturday’s Nations Championship clash in Turin. The Azzurri will be without the influential trio of Juan Ignacio Brex, Tommaso Menoncello, and Sebastian Negri. Flannery is adamant the hosts will still field a formidable outfit. He adds the Italians boast a quality squad anchored by a strong set-piece and explosive outside backs:
# Soccer: Next year’s Asian Cup had been postponed by over 11 months because of deadly attacks in the host country of Saudi Arabia. The tournament was planned to start on 7 January, but will now only begin on the 23rd of December next year. The Asian governing boday, AFC, says the decision was taken in light of the current exceptional circumstances in the Middle East, including substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions. World body FIFA must still approve the new dates.
# And motorsport: Formula One team Haas has confirmed Esteban Ocon will not race for the team again this season, with no reasons given. The Frenchman was replaced at last weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix following the Friday’s practice session, apparently after a row with team principal Ayao Komatsu. Ferrari junior and Formula Two standings leader Rafael Camara, who has signed with Haas for next year, will replace Ocon at his home race, the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, this weekend. He will partner British driver Ollie Bearman.
