# The National Consumer Commission advises consumers who have purchased specific peanut butter brands to cease consumption immediately and return the products for a full refund, regardless of proof of purchase. The commission’s spokesperson, Phetho Ntaba, says the affected brands include Dischem’s Lifestyle 400 and 800-gram Smooth and Crunchy, Wazoogles Superfoods-all sizes, Pick n’ Pay’s No Name one-kilogram Smooth, and Eden All Natural peanut butter. These products were found to contain higher than acceptable levels of Afla-toxin:
# Large numbers of dead marine animals have been washing up on the beaches on the West Coast due to the annual red tide. These mortalities include large numbers of prawns, crabs, cuttlefish, and many other species. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, in collaboration with various national and local authorities, has swiftly responded to the walkouts through a special contingency plan, and cautions members of the public not to eat the washed-out marine animals, because it could be contaminated by algal toxins. Ingestion of these toxins can lead to severe adverse reactions and even fatalities.
# Social Development deputy minister, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development, will tomorrow launch the chommy programme in Manenberg, Western Cape. It’s targeting ten to 14-year-olds in a community marked by gang-related crimes and drug abuse. The programme seeks to build positive friendships, motivating youth to minimise risky behaviour and social issues, including bullying. The department’s Lumka Oliphant says the programme aims to reduce HIV infections, substance abuse, and teenage pregnancies through knowledge, skills development, and youth empowerment:
# President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended well wishes to Chinese president Xi Jinping, the People’s Republic of China, and the Chinese community in South Africa as they celebrate Chinese New Year today. Ramaphosa has expressed hope for the vitality, and opportunities symbolised by the Year of the Dragon to be realised within Chinese communities globally. He calls for the deepening of the strategic partnership between the two nations, fostering prosperity, innovation, and global peace and development.
# And, finally, Soccer: The Africa Cup of Nations has produced a record 116 goals with two matches to go, but the final between hosts Ivory Coast and Nigeria could be a low-scoring affair, if history is repeated. SuperSport reports, there have been only 10 goals in the past 10 finals of the African football showpiece, and six of those came in just two title deciders. Of the other eight finals, four were won by a solitary goal and four by penalty shootouts. The kick-off is at 10 pm tomorrow. Tonight at ten, Bafana Bafana will battle it out for bronze with DR Congo.
