Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up is motorsport: Twenty-year-old Kimi Antonelli has claimed his maiden World Drivers’ Championship in just his second season, becoming the youngest Formula One champion in history. The Mercedes driver finished third at the Mexico City Grand Prix to secure the title with four races left in the season. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the race with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in second. Antonelli, who is also the first Italian world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953, says this is just the beginning:
# Rugby: The Springbok Women have slipped back to tenth in the world rankings following their second successive Test defeat to Ireland in the W-15 Global Series. Ireland won 38-17 in Cape Town on Saturday following last weekend’s 40-27 victory. South Africa would’ve climbed to eighth with a first-ever victory over Ireland. Bok Women co-head coach Franzel September says they have made good strides this year, and the next phase of their development will be to beat teams like Ireland.
More rugby: England’s head coach, Steve Borthwick, has warned his players against indiscipline, saying they recognise the vital importance of keeping 15 players on the field in the Nations Championship. England had amassed 15 yellow cards and one red card in their eight Tests so far this year, including four in their most recent outing against Argentina in July. Borthwick says his players will need to raise their standards at the breakdown and in defence if they are to compete successfully against Australia, Japan and New Zealand in the Nations Championship this month.
# Cricket: Australian captain Pat Cummins has admitted changes are needed after his side lost the Test series against South Africa 2-1, and the number one ranking. Chasing a target of 288, Australia were bowled out for 111 on day five to suffer a 176-run defeat in the deciding Test in Cape Town. This marked Australia’s third loss in their past five Tests. Cummins acknowledges selection discussions are inevitable before next month’s series against New Zealand:
# And lastly, tennis: Twenty-nine-year-old Alexander Zverev has officially replaced Italian Jannik Sinner at the top of the latest ATP men’s rankings. He is the first German to lead the rankings since Boris Becker in 1991 after claiming two Grand Slam titles this year. Zverev is also the 30th different men’s player at number one. Meanwhile, Spaniard Rafael Jodar has moved up to tenth in the rankings, becoming the first player since the rankings were introduced in 1973 to reach the top ten during his first full season on tour.
