Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We begin with cricket: Proteas fast bowler Marco Jansen has celebrated his 100th Test wicket by becoming the world’s best bowler and allrounder in the longest format. He reached his 100th scalp in Australia’s first innings in the third Test in Cape Town. Twenty-six-year-old Jansen made his debut for South Africa in December 2021 and is currently playing in his 23rd Test. He has accumulated 770 runs so far. The Proteas’ bowling coach, Piet Botha, says Jansen is a very hard worker who isn’t afraid to learn from other players.
# Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus is excited over the prospect of playing Italy, France and Ireland during next month’s Nations Championship visit to Europe. He says each one of them will pose different threats and challenge South Africa in various ways, and the fact that these matches now form part of a competition will add even more impetus. South Africa won all three Tests in the championship’s first stage, but Erasmus says this is an intense competition and it will be important to hit the ground running.
More rugby, the Springbok hooker Bongi Mbonambi will start his Stormers duty immediately after being picked on the bench for Saturday’s United Rugby Championship clash with Irish side Ulster in Cape Town. He was announced as the hosts’ new signing after leaving the Sharks. Vernon Paulo will wear the number two jersey, with the squad showing 11 changes from last weekend’s victory over Scarlets. Captain Ruhan Nel returns from injury, while Yaqeen Ahmed, who can make his Bok debut next month, and Cobus Reinach will be the half-back pairing.
# Motorsport: Thirty-six-year-old Sergio Perez has signed a new multi-year contract with Cadillac which will see him remain with the American Formula One outfit until at least 2029. His contract was understood to have been due to expire at the end of next year. Perez, who joined the team ahead of its F-1 debut this year, says the progress they have made together is incredibly rewarding. He is also set to make his 300th Grand Prix start in front of his home crowd in Mexico City on Sunday.
# And Olympics: The International Olympic Committee says it’s all systems go for the historic Dakar Youth Games in Senegal. Two-thousand-655 of the world’s best young athletes aged 14 to 17 are expected to take part in the first Olympic event to be held in Africa, from Saturday to 13 November.
