# And cricket: Shaun Pollock fully supports the pink ball as the answer to poor light
# The Limpopo province is looking to turn investment commitments into real economic growth, new businesses and jobs. Speaking at the 6th Limpopo Investment Conference, deputy president Paul Mashatile emphasised that the focus is on attracting investment that benefits communities, supports local businesses and creates opportunities for residents. He called for faster action to turn promises into results to grow industries, build stronger, more inclusive and sustainable economy:
# The Afrika Mayibuye Movement has welcomed three progressive commitments contained in COSATU 15th National Congress political resolutions. The commitments include advancing the National Democratic Revolution towards socialism, defending working-class and making political support conditional on a clear working-class programme. Mayibuye spokesperson Sydney Baloyi has also welcomed progress towards gender equality within COSATU’s leadership, with women occupying four of the six senior executive positions. Baloyi says this represents a significant affirmation of women’s leadership within the organised working class:
# Former deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya will remain in custody after the Randburg Magistrate’s Court postponed judgment on his bail application to Tuesday. Magistrate Hlengiwe Mkhabisi said she needed more time to consider the documents submitted during the lengthy proceedings. Sibiya’s lawyers have requested bail of twenty-thousand-rand, while the state argues he could flee the country if released. He faces rape and sexual grooming charges and denies all allegations.
# German airline Lufthansa has instructed some aircraft flying to Frankfurt to carry extra fuel as supplies tighten at the country’s largest airport. The airline says reduced capacity in a fuel pipeline, which is undergoing routine maintenance, has affected supplies. Low water levels on the Rhine may also be hampering fuel deliveries by river. The extra fuel will reduce the need for aircraft to refuel in Frankfurt. Lufthansa says the measure is precautionary and no flight cancellations are currently expected. Airport operator Fraport says operations are not affected.
# Cricket: Former Proteas captain and fast bowler Shaun Pollock says umpires must be empowered to switch from a red to a pink ball to keep play going. In the first Test between South Africa and Australia in Durban, bad light stopped play early on the first three days. A pink ball can be used provided both teams agree before the start of the match. Pollock lashed out over the stigma attached to the pink ball:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-53-cents against the rand and the euro at 18-rand-53-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-91-cents and Bitcoin trades at 80-thousand-539-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-152-dollars-74-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 106-dollars-49-cents a barrel.
