# Home Affairs minister Leon Schreiber has cautioned against disinformation surrounding a Constitutional Court judgment on asylum seekers. Speaking to the SABC, Schreiber says they are requesting the courts to clarify rules on detaining asylum seekers while their applications are processed. He believes detention should be permitted under certain conditions. He has rejected claims that Home Affairs grants automatic citizenship, voting rights or asylum:
Meanwhile, The Forum for South Africa is calling for a national referendum on immigration, border management, asylum processes and the country’s constitutional framework. Forum leader Tebogo Mashilompane says people who enter South Africa legally, obey the law and contribute to society must be treated with dignity and respect. But he says public frustration is growing over government’s perceived failures to control illegal immigration and secure the country’s borders:
# The City of Tshwane’s Human Settlements Department has issued an urgent warning to residents of Mamelodi extension 6 and surrounding areas regarding a fraudulent housing investigation scam. Con artists are posing as official representatives from the city and circulating a fraudulent document titled the Housing Beneficiary Investigation Questionnaire. Department spokesperson Doreen Mokgolo confirmed the municipality is not conducting any such survey or investigation:
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are due to meet Ukrainian officials in Miami today to present new proposals aimed at ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. The talks follow President Volodymyr Zelensky’s criticism of Washington, accusing it of being unwilling to help Ukraine defend itself after deadly Russian attacks. Kyiv wants stronger air defences and security guarantees, while the discussions are also expected to cover post-war reconstruction. European officials have been invited to join the talks. The diplomatic push comes as Russia and Ukraine continue attacks on each other’s infrastructure.
# Tennis: Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz has knocked four-time champion Novak Djokovic out of the Shanghai Masters, winning 6-4, 6-3 in the second round and advancing to the third round. The 29-year-old ended Djokovic’s eight-match winning record against him, producing 13 aces and 28 winners in an impressive display. The 39-year-old Serbian arrived in Shanghai fresh from winning a record seventh China Open title in Beijing. The defeat is another setback in a difficult season for Djokovic, who suffered a shock first-round exit at the US Open.
