# The National Youth Unemployment Movement noted Quarterly Employment Statistics showing employed persons fell from 10.43 million in March to 10.42 million in June, a decline of 14-thousand. NYUM’s Lindokuhle Yende says every job lost affects income and livelihood. Yende is concerned that young people face barriers including limited experience, skills mismatches and difficult school-to-work transitions and urged government to prioritise job creation and skills development:
# Build One South Africa says Cape Town residents must be protected before another mass shooting occurs. This follows the deaths of 16 people in three separate shootings in Lwandle, Khayelitsha and Joe Slovo Park over the weekend. BOSA’s Roger Solomons calls for stronger visible policing and more resources for police, including action against illegal firearms. Solomons says authorities must focus on preventing violent crime rather than only responding after lives have been lost.
# Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has urged American voters to reject President Donald Trump’s allies in Congress, as the final US forces leave Iraq after more than two decades. In a 26-page letter, the Guards called on Americans to oppose US support for Israel and military intervention abroad, while saying Iran and the United States could coexist if Washington changed its policies. Tehran has celebrated the withdrawal from Iraq as a victory. Meanwhile, Qatar is mediating between Iran and the US in efforts to end their seven-month-old war.
# Tennis: Second-seeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime’s China Open came to an abrupt end when he was eliminated in the first round in Beijing. He lost in straight sets to unseeded Russian Karen Khachanov within an hour and 11 minutes. Khachanov also beat Auger-Aliassime in the second round of the US Open earlier this month. Top-seeded German Alexander Zverev plays his first match of the tournament against Britain’s Cameron Norrie. The top-two women, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, join the action on Friday.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-37-cents against the rand and the euro at 18-rand-58-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-73-cents and Bitcoin trades at 84-thousand-427-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-176-dollars-10-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 102-dollars-10-cents a barrel.
# And finally, the 2026 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair is underway in Boksburg. Over three hundred South African learners and 24 international participants from eleven countries are presenting solutions to real-world challenges in robotics, engineering, and data science. Learners can win university bursaries and opportunities to compete at global science fairs. Eskom Expo director Parthy Chetty told the SABC that the programme’s develops the next generation of future scientists:
