# ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba says the party is declaring war on the collapse of local government in South Africa. He was speaking during the party’s launch of its local government election campaign in Johannesburg. Mashaba says ActionSA wants to end what he calls a culture of excuses, corruption and incompetence that has left millions paying more for less. He says the party has a plan to fix broken municipalities and improve local government across the country:

Meanwhile, the DA in Tshwane says it needs a 50-percent-plus-one majority to end coalition instability and govern the metro outright after the upcoming local government elections. The party’s Cilliers Brink says without that mandate, he expects the ANC and other parties to try to split the DA vote. He says those parties do not want to see the DA running a functioning city:

# COSATU is calling for urgent funding for the Employment and Labour Department’s plan to recruit an additional ten-thousand labour inspectors. Spokesperson Matthew Parks says this would strengthen efforts to crack down on violations of the labour rights of South African and migrant workers. He also wants government, business and labour to regularly review the Critical Skills List to attract scarce skills, upskill local workers and prioritise unemployed South Africans for training:

# Iran today insisted that only diplomacy ​can solve its conflict with the United States and Israel. This comes after US President Donald Trump on Friday said he rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait ‌of Hormuz and end fighting. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi posted on social media that their conditions were clear, and any move toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz is contingent on those conditions being met. He added that only a negotiated solution can get them out of this deadlock.

# Motorsport: George Russell won the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in a chaotic, crash-filled race at the Baku City Circuit yesterday. Converting his pole position into a victory, the Mercedes driver narrowly held off a late-charging Max Verstappen by a mere tenth of a second. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar came in third, marking a double podium for Red Bull. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished fourth. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli started 16th but recovered to finish 5th. Defending world champion Lando Norris crashed out after being caught up in a collision.

# And rugby: The Springbok Women produced a convincing 41-29 victory over Italy in the W-15 Global Series in Pordenone. South Africa scored six tries to Italy’s four, with Anushka Groenewald scoring twice, while Byrhandre Dolf, Maria Tshiremba, Micke Gunter and Logan Welman also crossed the line. The Boks led 24-12 at half-time before Italy briefly took a 29-27 lead in the second half. South Africa’s next fixture is against Spain on October 4 in Seville, followed by two matches against Ireland in Cape Town.
