# The wife of controversial businessman Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala, Tsakane, has been arrested in connection with an alleged fraudulent lease agreement. She was arrested by the Gauteng political killings task team following the arrest of Matlala’s close associates. Tsakane is accused of falsifying bank statements to help secure a 95-thousand-rand lease for a Waterkloof Ridge mansion in Pretoria. The number of suspects arrested in the matter stands at four.

# Self-proclaimed political fixer Brown Mogotsi has been denied bail for a fourth time by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. He faces charges including defeating the ends of justice and perjury for allegedly staging a fake assassination attempt on himself in Vosloorus, Gauteng. Magistrate Anneline Tlhapi found Mogotsi failed to provide a reliable and verifiable residential address, he was not a trustworthy applicant and was a flight risk:

# The Motor Industry Staff Association has criticised the criminal justice system after Zimbabwean businessman Lawrence Mudzinganyama was released on a warning over alleged threats to kill women at a Sandton restaurant in Johannesburg. He is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 1 October. The association’s Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says the decision raises serious concerns about the protection of women and the way threats of violence are handled:

Moving abroad:

# Torrential rain from Typhoon Dujuan has caused landslides and flooding in eastern Japan, killing four people and leaving six missing. Public broadcaster NHK says three people died in Chiba prefecture and one in neighbouring Kanagawa. Rescuers are searching for people feared trapped after landslides struck homes near Tokyo. The storm has moved northeast away from Japan, but flooding and landslide risks remain in some areas. About 45-thousand households are without electricity, while more than 460 homes have been damaged.

# Rugby: Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann announced a touring squad of 26 players for Saturday’s United Rugby Championship match against Zebre in Parma and next weekend’s against Munster in Ireland. The Pretoria team’s first home match will be against the Lions on the tenth of next month. Ackermann says they want to hit the ground running to prevent risking playing catch-up following last season’s seven-match losing streak. The squad includes Springbok fullback Willie le Roux, flyhalf Curwin Bosch and scrumhalves Paul de Wet and Keagan Johannes.
