# The Ophthalmological Society of South Africa warns that the global rise in short-sightedness is increasing the risk of retinal detachment and permanent vision loss. The warning comes ahead of Eye Care Awareness Month, which runs from Wednesday to 18 October. The society’s Viresh Dullabh says more screen time and less time outdoors are contributing to rising myopia among children and young adults. Dullabh recommends spending about an hour outdoors each day:
