# President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on BRICS countries to strengthen multilateralism through meaningful reform and collective action. He was speaking during a closed session on inclusive global governance and strengthening multilateralism at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India. However, the president warned that the relevance of the United Nations and the future of multilateralism are increasingly under threat due to violations of the UN Charter and the use of war to resolve disputes between member states:

Ramaphosa also says the United Nations and other global institutions no longer adequately reflect today’s realities and are ill-equipped to address the challenges of the future. He says Africa, which accounts for 54 United Nations member states and nearly one-fifth of the world’s population, remains without permanent representation on the UN Security Council. The president says South Africa has therefore reiterated its call for comprehensive reform of the Security Council to make it more representative, accountable, transparent and effective:

# The ANC has raised concerns over what it describes as escalating instability within the Department of Basic Education since the DA-appointed minister Siviwe Gwarube took over in 2024. The ANC’s NEC Subcommittee on Education, Health, Science and Technology says a recent meeting identified what it calls a sustained pattern of conduct by the Minister that is undermining stability within the department. The party says initial disagreements between Gwarube and sector structures have since developed into actions that it believes contradict approved government policies, legal mandates and established administrative practices.

# Parliament has confirmed that a man in his 30s unlawfully entered the parliamentary precinct in the early hours of Friday morning. Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo says the man was immediately apprehended by Parliamentary Protection Services. Moloto says he was then handed over to the South African Police Service and remains in police custody:

# Rugby: The Griquas have been crowned back-to-back Carling Currie Cup champions after clinching a hard-fought 23-16 victory over the Pumas. Playing in front of a packed home crowd in their hometown of Kimberley yesterday afternoon, the hosts staged a fierce second-half comeback to retain their domestic crown. Veteran fly-half George Whitehead starred in his 150th appearance, contributing 13 crucial points with his boot. Despite the Pumas leading 13-10 at half-time, a dominant late rolling maul powered the Griquas to a historic victory.

# And tennis: Elena Rybakina has won her first US Open title after beating defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling three-set final in New York yesterday. Sabalenka, from Kazakhstan, also won the Australian Open earlier this year, prevailing 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to claim her third Grand Slam crown. The victory sees Rybakina rise to world number one, ending Sabalenka’s 99-week reign at the top of the rankings. In the men’s singles final today, top seed Alexander Zverev faces American eighth seed Ben Shelton.
