# We begin with rugby: Springbok scrum coach Daan Human says it’s not in his nature to try to cheat or instruct his players to scrum illegally. This follows New Zealand coach Dave Rennie’s accusations over South Africa’s alleged underhanded tactics in the scrum. He suggested the Boks were “walking around” opponents in the set-piece. Human says they will work even harder to be precise in what they are doing in a scrum, emphasising straightforward dominance:

# Cricket: South Africa claimed a 43-run victory over Zimbabwe in their Namibian T20 tri-series contest to all but secure their spot in the final in Windhoek. Lhuan-dré Pretorius scored 94 runs from 51 balls and shared an opening partnership of 68 with Jordan Hermann before a second-wicket stand of 86 with Dewald Brevis. The Proteas posted 185 for seven. In reply, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 142, with Duan Jansen and Björn Fortuin sharing seven wickets. South Africa will face Namibia in their last round-robin match on Friday.

More cricket: Young Proteas fast bowler Kwena Maphaka believes he will be able to fill Kagiso Rabada’s role in this month’s home one-day series against Australia. Rabada is sidelined with injury and won’t return before next month’s Test series against the Aussies. Twenty-year-old Maphaka says he is confident in his abilities after leading the bowling attack for the Lions and South Africa Under-19. The ODI series against Australia starts in Durban on the 24th, and the first of three Tests on 9 October, also in the coastal city.

# Swimming: Olympic champion Tatjana Smith has issued Swimming South Africa with a letter of demand seeking payment of interest on prize money allegedly retained for more than a year. She alleges SSA retained the interest that accrued on 560-thousand-rand at the current exchange rate and 650-thousand-rand at the time in prize money earned at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Japan. Smith won gold and silver medals in the 200 and 100-metres breaststroke at the championships. Hurter Spies Attorneys, representing Smith, has given SSA ten days to comply.

# And tennis: Gael Monfils celebrated his 40th birthday in style as he progressed to the second round of the US Open. The Frenchman, who will retire at the end of the season, defeated Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo. Fifth-seeded Italian Flavio Cobolli needed five sets to beat Argentina’s Francisco Comesana. In the women’s draw, Kazakhstani Elena Rybakina, who is chasing the world number ranking, eased past American wildcard Thea Frodin to advance to the second round. Americans Coco Gauff and Madison Keys also won.
