# Judges Matter has applauded the appointment of Dire Tladi as South Africa’s inaugural permanent judge to the International Court of Justice. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Judges Matter Research and Advocacy Officer, Mbekezeli Benjamin, expressed pride in Tladi’s appointment, highlighting its significance for South Africa. Tladi, who was elected by the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council in November last year, will be sworn in today for a nine-year term:
# Fresh food and coffee chain, Pret A Manger, is coming to South Africa after signing a landmark agreement with private equity firm Millat Group. Founded in London in 1986, Pret A Manger now operates nearly 700 outlets in the world. Millat Group CEO, Hamza Farooqui, says the first Pret A Manger outlet will open in Johannesburg this quarter before expanding to Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria over the coming months. He adds that this partnership is in line with its strategy of bringing global brands into South Africa.
# South Africa’s digital parenting education platform, MySociaLife, will unveil the country’s first digital parenting club as the world commemorates Global Safer Internet Day today. Founder Dean McCoubrey emphasises the importance of empowering parents with essential tools to guide their children’s digital journey in the evolving digital era. The platform aims to address the challenges posed by screen time and artificial intelligence, shaping the future for children. McCoubrey says MySociaLife seeks to provide parents with the resources to navigate the digital landscape effectively:
# The University of South Africa says its 15th instalment of the Unisa International Piano Competition held in Johannesburg recently was a huge success. This year, pianists worldwide, including Germany, France, the USA, China, and Belgium, competed in the competition. In the classical category, Spain’s, Leo de María won, and in the jazz category, Dabin Ryu of South Korea won. Unisa principal and vice-chancellor, professor Puleng LenkaBula, says this competition is a testament to the power of music bringing together diverse cultures.
# And finally: The Randburg Harriers Running Club is gearing up for its annual Valentine’s Day Fun Run next week Friday. The ten-kilometre night run, set to traverse the scenic routes of Randburg, is open to participants aged 15 and above. The club’s spokesperson, Buwi Moeketsi, says attendees are encouraged to dress up in their most enchanting outfits and let’s see who catches Cupid’s eye. She says the event aims to celebrate the spirit of love and community.
