# Former Knysna mayor Aubrey Tsengwa has been shot dead

# Former Knysna mayor and current ward councillor, Aubrey Tsengwa, has been shot dead in Joodse Kamp. Western Cape police say the 48-year-old was attacked in his vehicle on Ngxalo Street. Three passengers were also wounded, with one taken to hospital. The attacker fled on foot and no arrests have been made. Tsengwa served as mayor from August 2022 until February last year. Police are investigating the motive behind the killing.

Still in the Western Cape:

Premier Alan Winde has appointed Jaco Londt as the new MEC for Education and Wendy Kaizer-Philander as the Social Development MEC. David Maynier, who was the Education MEC, is now the national minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. Londt moves from Social Development, where he has served since June 2024. Winde says Kaizer-Philander is an experienced public representative who has served as a member of the provincial legislature since 2018:

# Acting national police commissioner Puleng Dimpane has commended the community of Joubertina in Klerksdorp, North West, for responding swiftly to police’s call for assistance in tracing 27-year-old Simiso Phakathi. He was wanted in connection with the murder of his 37-year-old girlfriend, Jabulisile Tshabalala, in Soweto. Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says members of the community provided critical information within four hours after recognising Phakathi from his photograph:

Moving abroad:

# US president Donald Trump has threatened Iran with the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country, while a deal to end the war remains at an impasse. In a post on Truth Social, Trump says Tehran failed to accept a deal, resulting in what he calls economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale. He also warns there would be economic consequences for any country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran.

# Soccer: A member of France’s World Cup champion team of 2018, Paul Pogba, is without a club after Monaco released him from his contract due to regular injuries. He is currently sidelined with a thigh injury after recently returning from a knee injury. The French club says the objectives they’ve set for the 33-year-old midfielder had only been partially achieved. Pogba earlier played for English club Manchester United and Juventus in Italy. He played 91 matches for France from 2013 to 2022, scoring 11 goals.

# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-11-cents against the rand and the euro at 18-rand-86-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-97-cents and Bitcoin trades at 71-thousand-905-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-489-dollars-78-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 95-dollars-36-cents a barrel.
