# Justice and Constitutional Development deputy minister Andries Nel says ending gender-based violence requires translating policy into practical protection and accountability. Speaking at the South African Chapter of the International Association of Women Judges Annual General Conference in Bloemfontein, Nel highlighted the importance of policy to protection that advances accountability, justice, and systemic reform to end gender-based violence. Nel emphasised stronger victim-centred justice measures and coordinated action, including Sexual Offences Courts and Thuthuzela Care Centres to ensure survivors experience justice with dignity and protection.
# The government has condemned the killing of two anti-Gang Unit officers in Reiger Park, who were allegedly ambushed and shot dead. Deputy Government spokesperson William Baloyi says law-enforcement agencies have deployed resources to find those responsible. He emphasised that operations such as Operation Shanela are targeting crime hotspots, wanted suspects and criminal networks as the government works to strengthen community safety and uphold the rule of law:
Meanwhile, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union have called for coordinated and measurable national programmes to prevent attacks on law-enforcement officers, and improve intelligence-led policing. This follows the Reiger Park killing. The union says the measures are to ensure that attacks on police personnel receive immediate and specialised investigative attention. POPCRU has urged SAPS to mobilise all available resources to bring those responsible to justice, while appealing to residents to assist investigators and help combat organised crime.
# DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis has criticised dysfunctional municipalities, saying South Africans deserve local governments that deliver basic services. Launching the party’s manifesto in Johannesburg, Hill-Lewis made three key promises, including appointing qualified and honest people to municipal positions, protecting water and electricity revenue for those services, and enforcing consequences for corruption and wasteful spending. He pledged to restore functioning towns and cities ahead of the November 4 local government elections:
