Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with rugby: Stormers coach John Dobson expects a major clash of styles as his physical side prepare to face the All Blacks’ fast-paced game in Cape Town tonight. He says playing in the United Rugby Championship means the Stormers haven’t come across such a distinctive playing style as the All Blacks before. Dobson suggests his side’s best chance lies in imposing themselves physically and forcing the visitors out of their comfort zone:
Meanwhile, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has assured players on the fringes of the national squad they are part of his plans ahead of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry against New Zealand. He says tomorrow’s Test against Argentina is about building momentum, improving performance and giving returning players valuable game time after injury. Erasmus insists fringe players do not have to prove themselves to earn selection, saying squad rotation will be vital during the demanding four-Test tour. Erasmus also expressed confidence in captain Siya Kolisi’s fitness ahead of the clash.
# Athletics: Sixteen-year-old shot putter Jaco van Dyk secured South Africa’s first medal at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Oregon in the USA. He won bronze in a new personal best with a massive throw of 19.80 metres. Marko Ferreira claimed bronze in the men’s 100 metres in a time of 10.16 seconds. Kryn Romijn and Leendert Koekemoer have qualified for the men’s 400-metres final. Werner Gouws and Emil Els are into the men’s 800-metres semifinals, and Jan-Hendrik Heymans has qualified for the final of the men’s javelin.
# Soccer: Local governing body SAFA says more than 100-million-rand from its 218-million-rand World Cup prize money will be invested in soccer development and administration. Finance Committee chairperson Mxolisi Sibam says the decision reflects players’ wishes to strengthen grassroots soccer to produce future national stars. Local Premier League clubs will also benefit, with Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates set to receive over 25-million-rand each for contributing players to the Bafana Bafana squad. Meanwhile, 65-million-rand is allocated for player bonuses and coaching staff shares.
And more soccer news: European governing body UEFA maintains its intention to boycott FIFA competitions still stands, despite president Gianni Infantino’s apology over his abandoned plans to sell off stakes in the World Cup to private investors. UEFA says member nations were clear about the conditions attached to the non-participation in FIFA competitions, and not all conditions have been met. The boycott throws into doubt the participation of European teams in the next FIFA event in September, the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
