# Parliament suspends MP Fadiel Adams for 20 days

# Parliament has suspended National Coloured Congress leader and Member of Parliament Fadiel Adams until the end of August under the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act. He is accused of bringing Parliament into disrepute. The secretary of the impeachment committee, Thembinkosi Ngoma, confirmed the sanction following Adams’ absence from today’s meeting. Adams is expected to appear before the Madlanga commission on Tuesday, where he is due to address whistleblower complaints, allegations relating to leaked classified Crime Intelligence documents and related criminal allegations.

The impeachment committee has meanwhile recommended advocate Thandazani Madonsela as evidence leader into the Phala Phala allegations involving president Cyril Ramaphosa. He received majority backing from the EFF, the MK Party, Build One South Africa, the Africa Transformation Movement and United Africans Transformation. The ANC, Patriotic Alliance and Al Jama’ah abstained and the DA’s candidate, Kate Hofmeyr, lost by two votes. Chairperson Makashule Gana says Parliament’s administration will make the final appointment:

# The National Shelter Movement of South Africa welcomes president Cyril Ramaphosa’s appointment of it’s member, Zubeda Dangor, to the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide. The organisation’s Joy Lange says the council marks an important step towards strengthening the country’s response to gender-based violence and femicide. She expresses confidence that the council will improve coordination, support survivors and drive the implementation of the National Strategic Plan on GBVF:

Moving abroad:

# Fourteen people have been killed in Russian strikes on Ukraine’s capital of Kyiv and nearby areas today. At least 22 were injured. Moscow’s Defence Ministry says its military launched a massive strike using ground-based, precision-guided weapons and long-range strike drones. It says the attack hit transport, logistics and distribution centres, claiming the facilities were involved in the storage and delivery of various weapons and military cargo. Last month, Russian attacks killed at least 377 civilians in Ukraine, making it the deadliest month of the invasion.

# Cricket: England’s former captain, Ben Stokes, eyes a return to the national set-up as coach in future. The 35-year-old allrounder retired from the international game in June. Stokes also expressed surprise because Joe Root was named his successor as Test captain instead of white-ball captain Harry Brook. He says he wishes Root only success, but is worried over the extra responsibilities after he willingly relinguished the captaincy in April 2022. England’s next Test engagement is a home series of three mathes against Pakistan, starting on the 19th.

# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-37-cents and the euro at 18-rand-90-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-6-cents and Bitcoin trades at 64-thousand-25-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-170-dollars-72-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 83-dollars-94-cents a barrel.
