# We start off with soccer: Reigning champions Argentina scored two late goals to defeat England 2-1 in Atlanta and advance to Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain in New Jersey. England took the lead through Anthony Gordon in the second half. Enzo Fernandez equalised in the 85th-minute before substitute Lautaro Martinez headed in a 92nd-minute winner from Lionel Messi’s cross. Argentina aims to become the first team to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1958 and 1962. England will take on France in the third-place play-off in Miami on Saturday.

More soccer: Banyana Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis, admits selecting the final squad for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco has been tough. The final group of 26 will be announced tomorrow from a group of 31 attending a camp currently. South Africa had been drawn in Group B alongside Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Tanzania. Ellis says it’s important to select versatile players capable of filling multiple roles:

# Golf: Eight South Africans are participating in the 154th Open which teed off at Royal Birkdale in England this morning. They are Hennie du Plessis, Casey Jarvis, Jayden Schaper, Michael Hollick, Shaun Norris, MJ Daffue, Jack Buchanan, and Aldrich Potgieter, who took his injured compatriot Louis Oosthuizen’s place in the tournament. It’s the eleventh time the major is taking place at the course in Merseyside. American Scottie Scheffler won last year’s tournament at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

# Tennis: Seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz is targeting a return at the Cincinnati Open next month after being named in the entry list. The Spaniard has not competed since April, when he suffered a wrist injury in the first round of the Barcelona Open. The injury forced him to withdraw from tournaments in Madrid and Rome, and he also missed Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Alcaraz won the Cincinnati Open last year, a tournament in which he holds a 12–4 win-loss record.

# And finally, record-breaking rugby Test referee, Aimee Barrett-Theron, has stepped away from officiating with immediate effect after being diagnosed with breast cancer. The 39-year-old South African is the most experienced female referee in rugby and has taken charge of 52 Tests to date. She most recently took charge of the match between South Africa ‘A’ and Zimbabwe in Gqeberha last month. Barrett-Theron says she is determined to get through her treatment and recovery and return to the field stronger.
