In this bulletin:
# The Anele Tembe inquest is postponed to September
# ActionSA in Johannesburg says the refuse crisis is the price residents pay for years of financial mismanagement
# And rugby: Four new Boks will face Wales in Durban on Saturday
# The Cape Town Magistrate’s Court has postponed the inquest into Anele Tembe’s death to 7 September due to the presiding magistrate’s medical emergency. The inquest comes five years after Tembe’s fatal fall from the tenth floor of the Pepperclub Hotel. Six witnesses are expected to testify as the court examines the circumstances surrounding her death. Meanwhile, Tony Forbes, father of late rapper Kiernan Forbes, says he believes his son did not murder Tembe, his fiancée at the time. He also welcomes the court’s examination of the evidence.
# The family of the late South African Under-18 rugby player Luqobo “Bibo” Makwedini is preparing to travel to France to bring his body home. The young player, who was on a three-year contract with French club Béziers, died on Saturday after suffering heatstroke following a morning training session. He was rushed to hospital but later died. A family spokesperson told SABC News, they are now making arrangements to repatriate his body to South Africa.
# ActionSA in Johannesburg says the refuse collection crisis is no longer just an inconvenience. The party’s Nandi Ndaba says as Pickitup faces the prospect of an unprotected strike amid ongoing labour disputes, staff shortages and operational instability, thousands of households have been left wondering when, or if, their refuse will be collected. She says across many communities, rubbish continues to pile up on pavements, outside schools, and at shopping centres:
# The DA is calling for a national investigation into government departments’ alleged failures to report and prosecute child rape cases. Spokesperson Angel Khanyile says evidence submitted to the South African Human Rights Commission points to poor compliance with mandatory reporting laws, weak investigations and poor coordination between departments. She warns these failures allow perpetrators to escape justice, and calls for improved systems to better protect children:
# Rugby: Prop Carlu Sadie, lock Ruben van Heerden, wing Jaco Williams, and flyhalf Vusi Moyo will all make their debut for the Springboks on Saturday after being named in Rassie Erasmus’ starting-15 for the Nations Championship clash with Wales in Durban. Moyo will play alongside scrumhalf Cobus Reinach, while captain Pieter-Steph du Toit will form the loose trio combination with Paul de Villiers and Jasper Wiese. Erasmus says Wales is on the rise and will come out with a point to prove this weekend.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-34-cents and the euro at 18-rand-68-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-87-cents and Bitcoin trades at 63-thousand-56-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-and-68-dollars-47-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 77-dollars-93-cents a barrel.
