# Cape Town police are investigating two mass shootings that left seven dead and five injured in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, and Philippi East last night. Spokesperson Andrè Traut says in the first incident in Tafelsig, five men were shot outside a local tuck shop, with three victims, aged 18, 19 and 51, declared dead on the scene. He says in Philippi East, seven people were shot, resulting in four victims, aged between 17 and 20 years, succumbing to their injuries:

# Four suspects, including suspended City of Ekurhuleni head of legal services, Kemi Behari, have been arrested by the Madlanga commission’s recommendations task team. Behari was implicated at the commission after it emerged he allegedly shielded Ekurhuleni Metro Police chief Julius Mkhwanazi from disciplinary action. National police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, says the suspects were arrested during a takedown operation conducted in various parts of Johannesburg:

# The South African Iron and Steel Institute says the country must focus not only on imported steel, but also on manufactured goods made from imported steel that compete with local industries. In his opinion piece, secretary-general Charles Dednam says China’s growing exports of finished products pose a greater threat to South Africa’s manufacturing sector than raw steel imports alone. He has called for targeted trade measures, stronger localisation policies and better customs enforcement to protect downstream industries, jobs and industrial capability.

# South Africa has called on the US to end its economic, commercial, and financial embargo against Cuba, saying this remains the foremost impediment to the country’s attainment of its development aspirations. Cuba says the damage caused by the embargo during the period from March last year to February this year amounted to a record 131.2-billion-rand. South Africa’s ambassador to the United Nations, Mxolisi Sizo Nkosi, says they are also concerned about the US’ oil blockade against Cuba:

# Tennis: South Africa’s four-time Grand Slam champion, Kgothatso Montjane, and her British partner Lucy Shuker are through to the ladies’ wheelchair doubles semifinals at Wimbledon. They defeated France’s Ksenia Chasteau and the Netherlands’ Jiske Griffioen. Montjane won Wimbledon’s wheelchair doubles title with her Japanese partner, Yui Kamiji, in 2024, while Shuker has appeared in five doubles finals. The duo will face the number one seeds, Japan’s Yui Kamiji and China’s Zhenzhen Zhu, for a place in the final.

# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-36-cents and the euro at 18-rand-72-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-97-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-873-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-104-dollars-82-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 77-dollars-60-cents a barrel.
