# Minister Kubayi says the government is committed to strengthening border security
# And soccer: Spain will face Portugal in a mouth-watering last 16 World Cup clash
# Deputy president Paul Mashatile will deliver a keynote address at the Chery International Factory acquisition celebration in Tshwane today. This follows the Competition Tribunal’s approval of Chery International’s acquisition of Nissan South Africa’s vehicle manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, Gauteng. The transaction paves the way for Chery to begin manufacturing vehicles in the country for the first time, following Nissan’s decision to exit vehicle manufacturing there. The Presidency says the acquisition by Chery International represents a significant transition in ownership and also supports economic growth, job creation, and localisation.
# Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, says government is committed to strengthening border security, alongside a broader effort to manage migration and uphold the rule of law. In her capacity as the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration chairperson, she conducted a monitoring site visit at the new Temporary Repatriation Processing Centre in Musina, Limpopo, yesterday. Kubayi says the IMC’s objective is to ensure that the country’s immigration laws are respected and enforced and borders are secure:
# Western Cape MEC of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, says they will consider the implications of the Constitutional Court judgment on Tafelberg and the delivery of affordable housing in well-located areas. The case centres on the former Tafelberg School site in Sea Point, which activists have argued should have been used for affordable housing, rather than being privately sold. The court found that the province and City of Cape Town failed to meet their constitutional obligations to address apartheid-era spatial inequality. Simmers says the ruling reinforces the need for accelerated affordable housing.
# United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the latest attacks by Russia on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. At least 27 people were killed and 91 injured, including children, when Russian forces launched a major drone and missile attack on Kyiv on Wednesday. Guterres spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, says between December 2025 and May this year, civilian casualties in Ukraine increased by 40-percent compared with the same period a year earlier:
# Soccer: Two-time champions Spain cruised into the World Cup last 16 with a convincing 3-0 win over Austria in Los Angeles. Two goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and one from Pedro Porro secured the victory for the European champions. Spain’s win is their first in the knockout rounds of the World Cup since their triumph in South Africa in 2010. In Toronto, Portugal came from behind to beat Croatia 2-1, with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and a 94th-minute winner from Goncalo Ramos. Portugal will face Spain in Dallas on Monday.
