Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The DA warns the ANC over coalition governance
# The minister of Transport orders a probe into the deadly bus crash near Touwsrivier
# And cricket: MCC members are requested to attend the women’s World Cup final at Lord’s on Sunday
# DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis says the party will no longer remain silent when the ANC fails to consult or compromise in the government of national unity. He addressed party members in Sandton, Johannesburg, and insisted the ANC must respect the power-sharing agreement. Hill-Lewis accused the ANC of pushing key economic policies without sufficient consultation, emphasising the DA has a constitutional duty to hold its coalition partner accountable:
# The Madlanga commission has adjourned businessman Tumelo Nku’s testimony indefinitely due to serious security concerns. The decision follows his supplementary statement after intense questioning over the 2021 Aeroton drug bust in Gauteng. The commission’s spokesperson, Jeremy Michaels, says the safety risks are significant and the inquiry is proceeding with extreme caution. He says the format of Nku’s evidence will be determined later and an in camera process won’t be ruled out:
# Transport minister Barbara Creecy expressed condolences to the families of 16 people killed in a bus crash on the N1 near Touwsrivier in the Western Cape. The department’s spokesperson, Collen Msibi, says the bus was carrying 78 passengers to Idutywa in the Eastern Cape when it overturned early today. Twenty people were injured. Msibi confirmed a probe was ordered and a report is expected within 48 hours:
Moving abroad:
# The death toll in the Russian missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv has risen to 17 with over 90 people injured. Drones and missiles struck residential buildings, with a nine-storey building partially collapsing. The strikes followed Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky’s warning of a possible new wave of attacks. Moscow says it targeted military, energy sites, and airports in retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on its civil infrastructure. Ukraine’s targeting of energy sites in recent months has triggered a fuel crisis in Russia.
# Cricket: Members of the prestigious Marylebone (Marly-bone) Cricket Club in London were asked to attend Sunday’s final of the women’s T20 World Cup at their field, Lord’s. CEO Robert Lawson issued the request to prevent a repetition of the final of 2017, when the members-only pavilion was sparsely populated. He asked MCC members to turn out, irrespective of whether England or South Africa reaches the final against Australia. The two countries face off in today’s second semifinal. The MCC was earlier blasted as still principally for men.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-37-cents and the euro at 18-rand-66-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-81-cents and Bitcoin trades at 61-thousand-209-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-and-63-dollars-89-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 70-dollars-55-cents a barrel.
