BULLETIN 2 July 2 pm
Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The DA wants the proposed amendments to the firearms legislation and private security regulations withdrawn
# The Zimbabwean president says citizens returning home will be supported
# And soccer: A former Bafana midfielder wants Mosimane to become the new coach
# The DA is calling for the proposed amendments to the Private Security Industry Regulation Act and the Firearms Control Amendment Bill to be scrapped and reconsidered. The PSIRA amendments will impose additional requirements on private security providers regarding the issuing, carrying, storage, tracking and use of firearms and weapons. The Firearms Control Bill has been criticised for focusing on lawful firearm owners whilst criminals continue to operate with illegal weapons. The DA’s Ian Cameron says the amendments risk duplicating existing firearm controls:
# Union federation Cosatu is concerned about the potential ramifications of president Cyril Ramaphosa’s changes to the government of national unity’s executive. The changes are largely as per the request of DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis. Cosatu’s Matthew Parks says the appointment of Dina Pule as minister of Social Development is extremely worrying given the dark clouds under which she was previously removed as a minister:
# The City of Tshwane says it has been at the forefront of responding to citizens’ growing concerns about illegal immigration. In the past 18 months, the metro has led dozens of by-law enforcement operations that have successfully apprehended undocumented immigrants. The Tshwane Metro Police Department oversaw peaceful anti-illegal immigration demonstrations on Tuesday. Mayor Nasiphi Moya says they are cognisant of the economic and service delivery pressures felt by residents who are forced to share resources in a rapidly growing population.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwean president Emmerson Mnangagwa says his government is ready to support citizens returning from South Africa following the protests which prompted growing fears among foreign nationals, with several neighbouring countries assisting citizens wishing to return home. Mnangagwa says the Zimbabwean government will provide social protection, temporary assistance and psycho-social support to returning nationals:
# Soccer: Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Alex Bapela believes it’s time for coach Hugo Broos to depart, and for Pitso Mosimane to succeed him. Mosimane coached South Africa from 2010 to 2012, and his last coaching position with an Iranian team ended last year. Broos’s contract expired with Bafana’s World Cup exit, but he said recently he was open to remaining in charge. Bapela says it’s time for a new era and governing body SAFA should appoint a coach capable of leading Bafana over the long term.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-37-cents and the euro at 18-rand-67-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-82-cents and Bitcoin trades at 61-thousand-69-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-and-67-dollars-33-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 70-dollars-69-cents a barrel.
