# The Joburg Crisis Alliance calls for urgent intervention by the City of Johannesburg, the Department of Home Affairs, and the Malawian high commission to prevent a humanitarian crisis in South Hills. The organisation’s Nokuthula Khwela says an increasing number of Malawian nationals awaiting voluntary repatriation are placing severe strain on community groups providing food and temporary shelter. She warns inaction could deepen the crisis and fuel tensions:

The Department of Home Affairs has meanwhile dismissed as false a notice circulating on social media, claiming that members of the public would receive a 250-rand reward for reporting undocumented foreign nationals. The message did not originate from the department or minister Leon Schreiber. The department has encouraged the public to verify information through official channels before sharing. It adds everyone must play a part in promoting accurate information, responsible engagement and respect for the rule of law.

# North West businessman Brown Mogotsi has been denied bail for a second time by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. His initial application was rejected earlier this month after the court found he had failed to provide verifiable residential addresses. Mogotsi launched a fresh bid based on what his legal team described as new facts. He remains in custody while facing charges including perjury, defeating the ends of justice, and unlawful possession of a firearm linked to an alleged staged assassination attempt in Vosloorus.

# Soccer: South African governing body SAFA has confirmed former Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has officially applied to succeed Hugo Broos as head coach. The chairperson of SAFA’s Technical Committee, Jack Maluleke, says more than 80 applications have been received from local and international candidates, with all set to undergo the same interview process. The new coach will be appointed after the World Cup to allow preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin in September.

# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-42-cents and the euro at 18-rand-72-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-73-cents and Bitcoin trades at 60-thousand-248-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-46-dollars-63-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-11-cents a barrel.

# And finally: Cape Town has been named the world’s most beautiful city. Time Out’s latest list of the world’s most beautiful cities saw Cape Town receive 86-percent of the votes, followed by Edinburgh in Scotland, Sydney in Australia, Chicago in the US and Lisbon in Portugal. Mayoral committee member for Economic Growth, James Vos, says this accolade celebrates the metro’s breathtaking natural beauty, but is about far more than spectacular scenery:
