Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, we have soccer: Bafana Bafana’s captain, Ronwen Williams, says he is extremely proud of the character and mentality they showed in their must-win final World Cup Group A match against South Korea. Hugo Broos’ side secured a 1-0 victory in Monterrey, Mexico, to seal progression to the knockout stage for the first time. Williams says they used the criticism they have received over the last few days as motivation:
Coach Hugo Broos has also lauded his team for reaching the World Cup’s last 32 for the first time, saying it is an amazing achievement. Thapelo Maseko’s goal in the second half was what made the difference. Broos admits the last 20-minutes of the game was extremely stressful:
# Cricket: The Proteas Women play the Netherlands in a T20 World Cup group match in Bristol, England, this evening and is still on course for a place in the semifinals. South Africa turned their fortunes around after the loss to Australia, following that up with victories over Pakistan and India. They play their final group match against Bangladesh. The Proteas are currently third in the group behind Australia and India, but India still has to play the strong Aussies. Only the top-two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals.
More cricket: England’s captain, Ben Stokes, insists there is no divide between himself and coach Brendon McCullum. Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson were dropped from the second Test against New Zealand, which England lost by 253 runs, after a nightclub incident. They were later cleared following investigations by the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Independent Cricket Regulator. Stokes says his one-match suspension has brought him and McCullum closer together:
# And, Commonwealth Games: South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee has announced a strong group of athletes who will represent the country at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The country will have representation in athletics, swimming, boxing, gymnastics, para athletics, netball, judo, bowling, weightlifting, cycling, and wheelchair basketball.
