# Acting National Police Commissioner, Puleng Dimpane, says they are determined that South Africa must never again experience the levels of destruction, fear, and instability witnessed during the July 2021 unrest. This comes as police are preparing for planned anti-foreign demonstrations on 30 June. Dimpane met with the Private Security Industry yesterday to strengthen relations in support of public safety, crime prevention, and the maintenance of law and order. She says the private security industry is a critical partner in maintaining stability:
# The Freedom Front Plus says the latest Auditor-General report reveals serious financial mismanagement and corruption in many municipalities. The 2024/2025 report shows that more than half of municipalities are technically bankrupt, with many facing ongoing cash flow problems and approving unfunded budgets. It also highlights billions lost through irregular expenditure and infrastructure failures. The party’s Michal Groenewald says the findings reflect systemic governance failures under ANC-led municipalities:
# The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has confirmed that controversial North West businessman Suleiman Carrim will not appear before the commission as scheduled today. This is due to ill health. Earlier this month, he was medically unfit to testify, resulting in his appearance being rescheduled. Carrim was reportedly hospitalised in April after suffering a heart attack. The commission’s spokesperson, Jeremy Michaels, says despite this development, their work will continue:
# The Western Cape Government, in partnership with Go George, has launched a jobseeker travel voucher programme in George aimed at helping unemployed residents access job opportunities. The initiative provides free bus transport for people attending interviews, submitting CVs, and searching for work. The programme, which has already assisted more than 24-thousand people in Cape Town since 2024, is intended to remove transport barriers and improve access to employment opportunities for unemployed residents in the area.
# France has confirmed its first Ebola case linked to the current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A doctor returning from a humanitarian mission in the DRC has tested positive for the virus. France’s Health Ministry says the patient is in isolation and in a stable condition. Authorities are tracing the patient’s contacts, who will have to isolate for 21 days. The ministry has stressed that the risk to the population is very low. The ministry has set up a dedicated monitoring system for aid workers returning from the DRC.
# Cricket: The Proteas Women play the Netherlands in a T20 World Cup group match in Bristol, England, this evening, and are still on course for a place in the semifinals. South Africa turned their fortunes around after the loss to Australia, following that up with victories over Pakistan and India. They play their final group match against Bangladesh. The Proteas are currently third in the group behind Australia and India, but India still has to play the strong Aussies. Only the top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals.
