In this bulletin:
# Keir Starmer resigns as the UK prime minister and leader of the Labour Party
# The Central Energy Fund’s data points to a strong fuel price relief in July
# And rugby: Stormers centre Dan du Plessis moves to Bordeaux in France
# Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as British prime minister and leader of the Labour Party, stating his decision was driven by putting the country first and accepting that his party no longer sees him as the best leader for the next general election. He will remain in office until a new Labour leader is chosen, a process he has requested to be completed before Parliament reconvenes in September:
Back home:
# EFF leader Julius Malema has warned infighting among senior police officials is weakening South Africa’s security at a critical time. Speaking in Emfuleni Municipality in Gauteng, he urged members of the security cluster to work together and rebuild trust. Malema says divisions within the Police Service could create opportunities for criminals to disrupt the country. He calls for calm ahead of the planned June 30 anti-illegal immigration march:
Meanwhile, education activist Hendrick Makaneta has asked March and March movement’s leader, Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, that immigrant children be allowed to complete the academic year before any deportation processes are carried out. The anti-immigrant group has blamed children of foreign nationals for overcrowding in schools and called for the mass deportation of undocumented foreign nationals. Makaneta says children do not choose where they are born, nor should they be punished for circumstances beyond their control:
# South Africans can expect huge relief at the fuel pumps early next month. The Central Energy Fund’s latest data shows a strong over-recovery in petrol and diesel prices. Petrol prices are currently over-recovered by 2.94-rand per litre, andbetween 4.57- and 4.97-rand per litre for diesel. Analysts say this points to notable fuel price cuts in July, subject to levy adjustments. This follows after the country was heavily affected by global conflict, with punishing fuel prices weighing on businesses, motorists, airlines, and the taxi industry.
# Rugby: Stormers centre Dan du Plessis will join French giants Bordeaux from next month. The 31-year-old is the son of former Springbok Michael du Plessis and nephew of Boks Carel and Willie. He joined the Cape Town union in 2016 and played 31 matches for the Stormers and 35 for Western Province since, scoring a total of 110 points. Du Plessis signed a two-year contract with the European champions. English club Sale Sharks was reportedly also interested in his services, but he turned down their lucrative offer.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-41-cents and the euro at 18-rand-80-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-73-cents and Bitcoin trades at 64-thousand-113-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-209-dollars-65-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 78-dollars-84-cents a barrel.
