# Deputy minister Morolong says all economic reforms of the GNU must expand opportunities for the next generation
# ActionSA calls on South Africans to register to vote and fix broken municipalities
# And rugby: Morné Steyn believes Rassie wants to develop Quan Horn into the next Willie le Roux
# Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenny Morolong says every economic reform and investment that the government of national unity undertake must ultimately expand opportunity for the next generation. Morolong was speaking during the closing of the 11th Green Youth Indaba in Sun City, Rustenburg, North West last night. He emphasised the urgent need to convert youth innovation into sustainable enterprises, jobs and economic growth:
# Border Management Authority commissioner, Michael Masiapato announced that government and other stakeholders have intensified their immigration enforcement operations across the country. BMA spokesperson, Mmemme Mogotsi says yesterday, the BMA, police and Home Affairs facilitated the repatriation of 673 Malawian nationals and 202 Zimbabwean nationals through Beitbridge. She says the Zimbabwean nationals were transported on three buses from Gauteng, while the Malawian repatriation operation involved five buses from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal and a further five buses from Cape Town:
# As South Africans head to voting stations for the official voter registration weekend across the country, ActionSA is calling on all citizens to register to vote and fix the broken municipalities. The party’s Boitumelo Molefe says this year marks 50 years since the historic 1976 Youth Uprising. She says yet five decades later, millions of young South Africans remain trapped in unemployment, poverty, crime, failing infrastructure, and municipalities that have abandoned their constitutional responsibility to serve residents.
# Statistics South Africa says civil debt cases show mixed trends in the latest data for April. The number of civil summonses issued for debt decreased by 2.5-percent in the three months compared to the same period last year. However, civil judgements recorded for debt increased by 3.6-percent. Stats SA’s Vhonani Kwinda says this indicates fewer cases being issued, but higher debt recovery through court rulings:
# South Korean president Lee Jae Myung said yesterday the country’s election management system needed a major overhaul. He called a series of controversies involving the National Election Commission including ballot-paper shortages absurd. Lee has ordered a probe into the shortages that marred the June 3 local elections, saying prosecutors and police would take part. The incident triggered public anger and protests questioning fairness and resignation of the NEC chief. Lee also called for a stern response to any violence in the protests following the elections, while saying peaceful rallies should be protected.
# And rugby: Former Springbok flyhalf Morné Steyn believes Bok coach Rassie Erasmus delivered another masterstroke by giving the number ten jersey to the Lions’ regular fullback, Quan Horn, for today’s match against the Barbarians in Gqeberha. The 24-year-old has played very few matches at flyhalf, but Steyn thinks Erasmus probably wants to turn him into the next Willie le Roux, who can fulfil both roles efficiently. The Lions’ kicking consultant says Horn will have to fine-tune some aspects, but he believes he will be able to do that.
