Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Ekurhuleni officials’ case is postponed to July for evidence disclosure
# The Public Servants Association says stronger border management is an essential component of migration governance
# And cricket: South Arica’s Johan Botha resigns as Queensland Bulls and Brisbane Heat’s coach
# Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi and the metro’s city manager, Kagiso Lerutla’s court case was postponed to 2 July in the Boksburg Regional Court in Gauteng. The postponement will allow for further legal processes and disclosure of evidence. Both accused remain on bail. They face charges of fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice linked to an alleged impersonation scheme dating back to 2019.
# The Public Servants Association says South Africa’s migration challenges are closely linked to broader socio-economic conditions across the continent, including unemployment, poverty, conflict, and limited economic opportunities. This follows growing concern over anti-foreigner protests and the impact on relations across the continent. PSA’s Claude Naicker says migration discussions must not result in the stigmatisation of foreign nationals or the erosion of constitutional and human rights protections:
# The GOOD Party says Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis’s housing delivery ceremonial handovers are a misdirection. GOOD’s Roscoe Palm says the Fruit and Veg site in Roeland Street was announced in 2017, and then re-announced during a public ceremony in 2022. He says last year, Hill-Lewis again announced it as released for social housing. Palm says despite these announcements, not a brick has been laid:
# Cricket: Former South African white-ball captain Johan Botha has resigned as coach of Queensland Bulls and Brisbane Heat in Australia, with one year left on his contract. He had coached both sides for the past two years. Under Botha’s tenure, the Heat had missed the Big Bash League finals for two seasons running, while Queensland made the Sheffield Shield final in his first year in charge. Queensland Cricket’s CEO, Terry Svenson, says Botha has made a strong contribution towards the development of the next generation of players.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-45-cents and the euro at 19-rand-3-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-3-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-494-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-339-dollars-12-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 91-dollars-55-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The manufacturer of ChatGPT, Open-A-I, confidentially filed for a US initial public offering, joining rival Anthropic in a push toward the stock market as investors seek exposure to the artificial intelligence boom. Open-A-I did not disclose the size or terms of the offering, saying a timeline has not yet been determined. Reuters reports the A-I giant is targeting a valuation of up to 16.5-trillion-rand in a stock market debut that could come as early as September. Anthropic announced a week ago it had filed for an IPO.
