Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Gauteng’s crime figures drop 5.2-percent as murder and robbery cases show declines
# The Please Call Me inventor seeks private prosecution in a funding dispute
# And rugby: The Bulls decide not to stay in Europe before the United Rugby Championship final
# Gauteng recorded a 5.2-percent decrease in overall community-reported serious crimes in the fourth quarter of 2025/26. Provincial crime statistics released by police show murder and attempted murder cases declined by 15- and 3.2-percent, respectively, while carjackings dropped by 17.1-percent. Provincial commissioner Tommy Mthombeni says kidnappings increased slightly. He credits integrated law enforcement operations, including Operation Shanela Two, which led to over 360-thousand arrests and multiple recoveries of firearms, drugs, stolen vehicles, and illicit goods.
# Forum for South Africa calls for an immediate and transparent investigation into allegations involving the wife of former Organised Crime Unit head, Richard Shibiri. He was dismissed last week after being found guilty of misconduct, including associating himself with a known criminal. Shibiri’s wife apparently remains the head of detectives at Krugersdorp police in Gauteng, despite not having the required qualifications. FOSA leader Tebogo Mashilompane says this warrants urgent attention:
# Please Call Me inventor Nkosana Makate is seeking certification from the National Prosecuting Authority to pursue private prosecution against former British investor Errol Elsdon. Makate alleges fraud and forgery against Elsdon linked to a claim for 40-percent of his Vodacom settlement. Vodacom reportedly paid Nkosana Makate about 550-million-rand. Elsdon has denied any wrongdoing and rejected allegations of criminal conduct. This has been a long-running legal battle over compensation from the settlement.
# The ANC Youth League in Greater Johannesburg is set to open a case of culpable homicide against Cartrack following the death of an employee. The 29-year-old woman apparently died after reporting several times she was not well, but was asked to work regardless. The company says the woman received immediate assistance from trained on-site first responders. The league’s Oscar Kanyane says workers shouldn’t have to choose between their health and livelihood:
# Rugby: The Bulls return home today after deciding not to stay in Europe after beating Glasgow Warriors in the United Rugby Championship semifinal. They will rather recover in Pretoria before leaving for next weekend’s final against Leinster in Ireland. This will be a repeat of last season’s final which the home team won 32-7. The match will again be played at Croke Park in Dublin. The Bulls are still hoping for a first title after reaching the final four times in the past five years.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-45-cents and the euro at 19-rand-1-cent. One British pound costs 22-rand-2-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-869-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-332-dollars-56-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 91-dollars-32-cents a barrel.
