In this bulletin:
# The DA leader says a broken criminal justice system leaves South Africans at risk
# Donald Trump suggests America will declare total victory over Iran over the next two weeks
# And soccer: Broos says Bafana Bafana will have to be at their best to beat Mexico in the World Cup opener
# The DA says the criminal justice system is failing to protect victims of crime. Its oversight visits found shortages of sexual offence evidence kits at some police stations, which affects cases of gender-based violence. DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis says weak policing, poor investigations and delays in court are allowing criminals to go free and leaving communities unsafe. He calls for better law enforcement, stronger investigations and faster court processes to improve safety and ensure criminals are brought to justice.
# President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the deadline for Eskom’s restructuring task team to produce a report on establishing South Africa’s independent Transmission System Operator to the end of this month. The work centres on establishing a fully independent, state-owned transmission system operator that will own and control transmission assets. Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, says the work is undertaken in two phases: the establishment of the operator and developing a detailed implementation plan:
# Parliament’s portfolio committee on Police has welcomed the suspension of an additional five senior police officers in connection with the controversial 360-million-rand Medicare24 tender. A total of 14 officers have been arrested over the tender awarded to attempted murder-accused Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala’s company. Committee chairperson Ian Cameron says the suspensions are a necessary step towards achieving meaningful accountability. He adds corruption within the Police Service not only undermines legislated processes and procurement systems, but also erodes public trust in the police.
Moving abroad:
# US president Donald Trump says they will declare total victory over Iran in the next two weeks. He has repeatedly stated he expects the conflict to reach a conclusion soon, with tensions continuously escalating after such declarations. Trump has also warned multiple times that military action could intensify if Tehran fails to reach a deal. He says Iran is willing to agree to US demands, including not having a nuclear weapon:
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos insists they will be ready to face co-hosts Mexico in their World Cup opener on Thursday, saying they have the right game plan and it just comes down to execution. South Africa heads into the fixture off the back of a draw with Nicaragua in Johannesburg on May 29, and a draw with Jamaica in Pachuca this past weekend. Broos expects his side to face an intimidating atmosphere, emphasising that Mexico is a dangerous team:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-44-cents and the euro at 19-rand-97-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-96-cents and Bitcoin trades at 63-thousand-308-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-333-dollars-64-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 92-dollars-6-cents a barrel.
