BULLETIN 8 June 11 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The March and March Movement says Ramaphosa’s solutions to illegal immigration are impractical
# The ANC suspends three Eastern Cape members who interdicted the party’s provincial conference
# And rugby: Tony Brown will leave the Springboks after the World Cup to join the All Blacks
# Anti-immigration civic group March and March Movement has welcomed aspects of president Cyril Ramaphosa’s address on illegal immigration, but says government’s proposed measures fail to address the scale of the crisis. He said government would improve its migration strategies and clamp down on those illegally entering the country. March and March leader, Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, says Ramaphosa needs to go back to the drawing board:
Meanwhile, union federation SAFTU supports government’s stronger action against employers who exploit undocumented workers. Ramaphosa also warned harsher penalties, including jail terms, will be imposed for employers who hire undocumented migrants. SAFTU’s Asive Dyani says corrupt Home Affairs officials, labour brokers who facilitate exploitation, and criminal syndicates and vigilante groups that assault people under the guise of enforcing immigration laws must also face prosecution:
# The ANC’s provincial task team in the Eastern Cape has suspended three members who successfully launched a legal challenge preventing the party’s provincial conference from going ahead in March. They are Lwazi Rotya, Sinethemba Mpande, and Nompumelelo Mzothwa. The team has accused them of misconduct and bringing the party into disrepute. The ANC has repeatedly made it clear that while members have the right to disagree and raise concerns, they cannot continue to drag the organisation to court in ways that paralyse its operations.
Moving abroad:
# A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Mindanao region in the southern Philippines this morning, killing at least 15 people and injuring 129. About 138 aftershocks have been recorded. The earthquake triggered tsunami warnings in the country and neighbouring Indonesia as well as Japan. Officials have warned the death toll could rise as emergency personnel continue to work through collapsed buildings. The Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan are situated in the so-called Ring of Fire, a string of underwater volcanoes and sites of increased seismic activity.
# Rugby: Springbok assistant coach Tony Brown has signed a two-year contract with New Zealand from 2028. He played 18 Tests for the All Blacks between 1999 and 2001. Brown’s contract with the Boks ends after next year’s World Cup in Australia. Dave Rennie and the rest of his All Blacks coaching staff are currently only contracted until the tournament. New Zealand Rugby CEO Steve Lancaster says Brown is a world-class coach:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-65-cents and the euro at 19-rand-17-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-19-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-885-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-299-dollars-43-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 96-dollars-64-cents a barrel.
