Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with rugby: France defeated Great Britain to win the World Rugby Sevens Series title in Los Angeles, their first title in 19 years. France secured the men’s gold medal with three unanswered tries in a 21-nil victory, with their only previous victory coming on home soil in Paris back in 2005 and having lost all six finals they have contested since then. Player of the final, Stephen Parez, says winning bronze in Canada last week, and gold this week is amazing:
Meanwhile, the Blitzboks finished a disappointing eleventh place. Four tries – from Zain Davids, who scored twice, Ryan Oosthuizen, and Tristan Leyds, gave South Africa a 28-15 victory against Canada in the eleventh-place play-off. This is the second consecutive tournament that the Blitzboks have failed to get out of their pool. Meanwhile, the Springbok Women’s Sevens finished sixth after going down 53-nil to France in the fifth-place playoff.
# Soccer: Manchester City came from behind to beat Manchester United three-one in their Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium. Marcus Rashford gave the visitors the lead with a wonder of a strike in the eighth minute. In the second half, City dominated and Phil Foden equalised in the 56th minute. He scored again to put the reigning champions ahead and Erling Haaland scored the third to secure victory, moving them one point behind leaders Liverpool. City manager, Pep Guardiola, gave praise to Foden:
# Motorsport: Reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, says he is happy that he has started the season with a win. The Red Bull driver continued where he left off last season, as he converted pole position into a race win with a controlled drive at the Bahrain Grand Prix. His teammate Sergio Perez finished second with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz in third. Verstappen, who is looking to make it four consecutive world championships, says he hopes the team can build on this strong start:
# And tennis: World number two Carlos Alcaraz only just succeeded in beating his famous Spanish compatriot Rafael Nadal in their exhibition match in Las Vegas, America. Nadal won the first set and Alcaraz the second, with Alcaraz edging out Nadal 14-12 in the deciding tiebreaker. Both players used the game as preparation for the Indian Wells Masters, starting on Friday. A hip injury kept Nadal out of the game for a year before his comeback in Australia in January was cut short with a small muscle tear.
