Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with Cricket: A century from Kane Williamson and a half century from Will Young powered New Zealand to a comfortable seven-wicket win over the Proteas, in the second test at Seddon Park in Hamilton. Earlier in the match the Proteas batted first scoring 242 all out. The Black Caps responded with 211 all out, giving the Proteas a slim 31-run lead. The second innings saw the visitors all out for 235. This set New Zealand 267 to win, which they chased down in the end. The win gave the hosts a first ever test series win over the Proteas.
# Rugby: The United Rugby Championship returns after a three-week break this weekend, and local fans will be treated to two South African derbies. The Sharks will host the Stormers at Kings Park in Durban, while Ellis Park will be the venue for the Jukskei derby between the Lions and the Bulls. The Pretoria team beat their neighbours 30-28 at Loftus Versfeld in round nine of the competition, and Bulls co-captain Marcell Coetzee says they are heading south with a heightened focus for the return fixture:
Staying with the United Rugby Championship, Springbok lock RG Snyman will start for Irish team Munster in tonight’s clash against Scarlets in Llanelli, Wales, following his return from injury. Munster has confirmed he has fully recovered from a chest injury sustained during the World Cup final in October. He was initially expected to only return next month. Snyman is set to leave Munster at the end of the season to join Leinster and reunite with former Bok head coach Jacques Nienaber, who is now the team’s senior coach.
And in more Rugby news, Ireland and Wales may play in alternative jerseys when they face each other in future. This is to make it easier for colour-blind spectators to watch their games. The combination of Wales’ traditional red and Ireland’s green jerseys poses particular problems for colour-blind people, making it difficult to follow games. When World Rugby’s new regulations come into force at the end of the year, the onus will be on the visiting team to make a gear change if necessary.
# And finally, Golf: Tiger Woods says he is pain-free as he prepares for his first PGA Tour event of 2024 at the Genesis Invitational. But, the 15-time Major champion says he is still adapting after the ankle surgery he underwent in April 2023. Woods’ schedule has been limited since injuring his leg in a car crash in 2021. He withdrew from the Masters in April 2023 before making his return to competitive action at the Hero World Challenge in December. He says he still has ambitions to play for as long as possible.
