Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus is expected to make several changes to his squad for Saturday’s second Test against Italy in Gqeberha. This follows a not-so-impressive display in the first Test at Loftus. South Africa did outscore the visitors with six tries to three to win 42-24, but more was expected from the world champions after a half-time lead of 28-3. Erasmus wants to give as many players as possible game-time to build the strength of the squad and says the Boks must be imposing this time around.
# Soccer: Banyana Banyana got their Women’s African Cup of Nations title defence off to a winning start, beating Ghana 2-0 in Morocco. Linda Motlhalo converted a penalty before Jermaine Seoposenwe added the second goal in the first half, to help South Africans start the continental tournament with maximum points. Banyana Banyana will next face Tanzania in Group C on Friday. Coach Desiree Ellis says she is happy with their overall performance:
# Cricket: Zimbabwe resumed their follow-on innings on 51 for one on the third day of the second Test against South Africa in Bulawayo – trailing by 405 runs. The Proteas declared on 626 for five in their first innings with stand-in captain Wiaan Mulder unbeaten on 367 off 334 balls. The hosts were then skittled for 170 in their first innings, with debutant Prenelan Subrayen taking four wickets.
# Motorsport: South Africa’s Formula One bid steering committee has concluded the selection of a potential promoter as the country bids to host a Grand Prix for the first time since 1993. The committee says the selection was the outcome of a structured and fair multi-phased process. Among the requirements for the successful registration of a bid was a fully refundable deposit of ten-million-rand. Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, says the chosen promoter cannot be revealed as numerous processes and engagements must still be followed.
# And finally, tennis: World number one Jannik Sinner of Italy is through to Wimbledon’s quarterfinals after Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov was forced to retire injured after winning the firsst two sets. Serbia’s Novak Djokovic battled past Australian Alex de Minaur in four sets to reach his 16th quarterfinal. American Ben Shelton and Italian Flavio Cobolli are also through to the last eight. Sinner says it is regrettable how the match ended:
