Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# Rugby: SA Rugby has confirmed key changes to the coaching line-up of its national teams in a bid to emulate the success enjoyed by the Springboks. Former Springbok consultant Swys de Bruin has been appointed as the Springbok Women’s performance coach until the Women’s World Cup in England in September next year. Former Springbok Sevens captain Kevin Foote returns to South Africa from Australia to lead the Junior Springboks. Bafana Nhleko has been redeployed from the SA Under20s to the senior women’s fifteens team.
De Bruin says he cannot wait to start the 2025 World Cup journey with the Springbok Women. He says he is determined to not only prepare the team for a best-ever performance at the World Cup, but to also deliver eye-catching performances at next month’s Women’s 15 in Cape Town:
# Cricket: Australia’s Northern Territory Cricket hopes next year’s white-ball series between the Proteas and the Baggy Green will see a return to international cricket for Darwin. The city hosted the last of its four one-day internationals in 2008. Australia and South Africa will play three ODIs and three T20s in August next year and CEO Gavin Dovey is negotiating with Cricket Australia for some of the action in Darwin. He says it’s one of the few places in Australia ideally suited for winter cricket.
# Motorsport: The 2025 and ’26 MotoGP seasons will begin in Thailand, marking the first time in over 25 years the championship starts in Southeast Asia. The Buriram circuit is due to host the season-opening race on 2 March next year, moving up from its current slot in late October. It first staged a MotoGP event in 2018 but did not host races in 2020 or ’21 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The season has traditionally kicked off in Qatar in recent times, although last year Portugal held the opening race.
# And, tennis: Spanish great Rafael Nadal says he hasn’t decided yet when he will retire, and won’t be rushed into making that decision. The 38-year-old winner or 22 Grand Slam tournaments currently prepares to represent Team Europe in next month’s Laver Cup competition in Berlin. He will team up with compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev of Germany, Daniil Medvedev of Russia, Norwegian Casper Ruud, and Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas. Nadal says he will call it quits as soon as he feels he isn’t competitive enough anymore.
