Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We once again concentrate on the Olympic Games: Paris witnessed one of the most remarkable Olympic 100-metre showdowns of all time. Noah Lyles won his first Olympic gold medal as he crossed the finish line just five-thousandths of a second ahead of Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson. The American won in 9.79 seconds, while all eight men finished within 0.12 seconds of the gold medal. It was also the first time that eight men had run under ten seconds, making it the fastest race of all time. Lyles says it was incredibly tight:
South African sprinter Akani Simbine narrowly missed out on a bronze medal, finishing fourth. He set a new national record with a time of 9.82-seconds. American Fred Kerley took the bronze medal. Meanwhile, South Africa’s Prudence Sekgodiso has qualified for the women’s 800-metre final in a time of one-minute-57.5 seconds on her Olympic debut.
In the tennis competition, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic defeated Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, 7-6, 7-6, in the men’s singles final to win his first gold medal at his fifth Games. The 37-year-old is the fifth player to win the Golden Slam in singles, namely all four majors, and the Olympic title, after Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, André Agassi, and Steffi Graf. Bronze went to Italian Lorenzo Musetti. Djokovic says he is overwhelmed that he has finally achieved this feat:
American Scottie Scheffler carded a final round nine-under 62 to win the gold medal in the men’s golf. The world number one is already a six-time winner on the PGA Tour this year, including winning his second Masters title. Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood secured the silver medal and Hideki Matsuyama of Japan the bronze. South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Erik van Rooyen finished 16th and 17th respectively.
The mixed relay triathlon will go ahead as scheduled today after organisers tested the water quality of the River Seine. The water quality of the Seine caused the men’s triathlon to be delayed by a day last week, while the practice swim for the mixed relay was postponed on Sunday. Belgium has withdrawn from the mixed relay triathlon after one of their athletes fell ill. Unconfirmed reports state Claire Michel, who competed in the women’s triathlon last week Wednesday, became ill.
And Britian’s six-time Olympic swimming medallist Adam Peaty has questioned China’s victory in the men’s four-by-100-metre medley relay in Paris following doping allegations. Two of the four gold medallists, Qin Haiyang and Sun Jiajun, were among the 23 Chinese swimmers who reportedly returned positive doping tests before the Tokyo Olympics. They were all cleared to compete based on a finding they had unknowingly ingested a banned substance via contaminated food. Peaty says there is no point in winning if you are not winning fair.
