Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with cricket: Proteas captain Temba Bavuma says the mistakes they made in the first Test against Australia in Durban were mental rather than reckless. The visitors clinched a 214-run victory after Matt Renshaw scored his best-ever Test knock of 190. Bavuma acknowledges the batters did not rise to the occasion, saying there were too many soft dismissals. He hopes his side can rally in the second Test, starting in Gqeberha on Sunday.
# Soccer: Banyana Banyana went through to the third round of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualifiers after a commanding 7-0 aggregate victory over Madagascar in Bloemfontein. South Africa won the second leg 3-0 with goals from Gabriela Moodaly-Salgado and a brace from substitute Ronnel Donnelly. The 2022 African champions will now face Angola in the third round early next year. Banyana coach Desiree Ellis is happy with the overall performance:
# Rugby: South African teams now turn their attention to the Champions Cup and the Challenge Cup competitions, where they haven’t had much success in the past. The Stormers, the Bulls and the Lions are competing in the Champions Cup and the Sharks and the Cheetahs in the Challenge Cup. The Stormers play English club Bristol Bears in Cape Town and the Bulls will welcome Stade Francais to Loftus. The Lions are up against La Rochelle, the Sharks play Lyon, and the Cheetahs play Aviron Bayonnais – all in France.
Meanwhile, Springbok loose forward Evan Roos plays his first match of the season for the Stormers in Saturday’s match against Bristol Bears. He returns from a hamstring injury in place of injured Hacjivah Dayimani in the number eight jersey. The hosts feature an all-new front row in the starting-15, consisting of Vernon Matongo, JJ Kotzé and Sazi Sandi. Springboks Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Cobus Reinach start as the halfback-pairing.
# And lastly, motorsport: Rwandan president Paul Kagame has dismissed suggestions Formula One is too big for a small country like his. Rwanda has signed a ten-year deal to host an F-1 Grand Prix from the early 2030s, the first in Africa since 1993. The race will take place once the new purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, 40 kilometres south of the capital of Kigali, has been completed. Kagame says no event is too big for Rwanda:
