Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with rugby: The Bulls have named three-time South African Coach of the Year, Johan Ackermann, as their new head coach. Jake White and the Bulls mutually parted ways after five years earlier this month after he took the team to three United Rugby Championship finals in four seasons. Ackermann has described his appointment as a dream come true. Blue Bulls Company CEO, Edgar Rathbone, says Ackermann is not just an outstanding coach, but a leader who lives and breathes the values of this union.
Meanwhile, lock Eben Etzebeth will extend his record as the most experienced Springbok player to 133 Tests on Saturday after being included in the starting-15 against Georgia in Mbombela. He will partner Ruan Nortjé. Winger Kurt-Lee Arendse can reach the milestone of 100 points for South Africa if he adds just one try. The encounter will be the two countries’ third, with the Boks beating them 46-19 during the pool stage of the 2003 World Cup in Australia, and again 40-9 in Pretoria in 2021.
# Cricket: West Indies cricket president Kishore Shallow has called for an emergency meeting involving past greats, after the team was bowled out for just 27 in the third Test against Australia. Fast bowler Mitchell Starc took six for nine as the Windies made the second-lowest score in Test history, suffering a humiliating 176-run defeat at Sabina Park. They just avoided New Zealand’s record low of 26, set in 1955, and Shallow says there would be an inquest to review the dismal 3-0 series loss.
Meanwhile, legendary English pace bowler Jimmy Anderson will play for Manchester Originals in this year’s The Hundred, marking his first franchise tournament after a professional career spanning 25-years. Anderson will be 43 when the tournament begins next month. He retired as England’s all-time leading wicket-taker last year after claiming 704 Test scalps and 269 in one-day internationals. His former teammate Andrew Flintoff’s teenage son, Rocky, will play for Northern Superchargers where his father is head coach.
# And finally, golf: Defending champion American Xander Schauffele will play alongside compatriot JJ Spaun and Spain’s Jon Rahm in the first two rounds of the Open Championship starting at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland tomorrow. Home favourite Rory McIlroy has been grouped with England’s Tommy Fleetwood and American Justin Thomas, as he chases a second major win of the season. World number one American Scottie Scheffler will battle alongside compatriot Collin Morikawa and Ireland’s Shane Lowry. There are ten South Africans in the field, led by Louis Oosthuizen.
