Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up we have soccer news: President Cyril Ramaphosa says Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has selected the best team to represent South Africa at the World Cup in Northern America. Broos named uncapped defenders Olwethu Makhanya and Bradley Cross in his final 26-player squad, which will be captained by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. South Africa faces co-hosts Mexico in the tournament opener on 11 June. Ramaphosa has called on the players to show sportsmanship, camaraderie, professionalism, and teamwork:
# Rugby: The United Rugby Championship warned players they will be punished for going overboard when challenging on-field decisions. Teams have complained about certain players, especially from Irish provinces, consistently challenging referees and asking for reviews of potential head contact. The URC’s head of referees, Tappe Henning, says captains are allowed to approach the referee to raise an issue, but the rest of the players cannot shout or challenge decisions on any aspect of the game. The quarterfinals are taking place this weekend.
Other rugby: Blitzboks player Gino Cupido says they will start from scratch this weekend, despite their recent successes. South Africa clinched the international Sevens series before winning in Hong Kong in the first of three world championship tournaments. The second takes place in Valladolid, Spain, this weekend, where the Blitzboks take on Great Britain, Kenya and Australia in Pool A. The final tournament will be played in Bordeaux, France, early next month. Cupido says he once again wants to help the team push for glory.
# Cricket: Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi powered Rajasthan Royals to a 47-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League eliminator. Fifteen-year-old Sooryavanshi scored 97 off just 29 balls as Royals posted 243 for eight. Jofra Archer then claimed three wickets as Sunrisers were bowled out for 196. Rajasthan will now face Gujarat Titans in tomorrow’s second qualifier, with the winner progressing to play defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Sunday’s final.
# And tennis: Three-time champion Novak Djokovic believes the French Open’s heat rules need to be changed. The Serb played local player Valentin Royer in the middle of the afternoon yesterday, as Paris experienced temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. Djokovic has suggested that Roland Garros could either suspend play during the day, like at the Australian Open, or start matches later, even if it means competing late into the night when it’s cooler:
