Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We begin with Cricket: The second and final Test between South Africa and New Zealand is turning out to be a much more competitive contest. The Proteas were bowled out today for 235 runs in their second innings. This gives the Black Caps a victory target of 267 runs, which would be a record chase at Seddon Park in Hamilton. David Bedingham was the star for South Africa as he scored his maiden Test century, while William O’Rourke picked up five wickets. At stumps on day three, the home-side had 40 for one, needing another 227 to win.
# Rugby: France will be without captain Gregory Alldritt for next weekend’s Six Nations clash with Italy in Paris. He sustained a cut to the left thigh during the second-round encounter with Scotland in Edinburgh in which France scraped through 20-16. Alldritt will be out of action for two to three weeks, but should be ready for the final two games of the series – against Wales on the tenth of next month, and England six days later. Charles Ollivon will probably lead the team in his absence.
# Motorsport: Red Bull boss Christian Horner will attend Red Bull’s 2024 car launch today. He is facing allegations by a female colleague but categorically denies the claim that he behaved in an inappropriate and controlling way. He was quizzed on Friday by a lawyer for eight hours as part of a Red Bull probe that could last for several weeks. The 50-year-old Horner has been Red Bull’s team principal since 2005. During his time with Red Bull, Horner has overseen seven drivers’ world championships and six constructors’ titles.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton admitted he was emotional at the launching of his Mercedes for the new Formula One season. He announced recently he will leave at the end of the year to join Ferrari, saying the prospect of driving in the famous red car was just too hard to turn down. The British driver won six of his seven world champion titles since joining Mercedes in 2013, but couldn’t win a race in the past two seasons. He said he was mega motivated to change that this year.
# And finally: Soccer: Former Dutch international footballer, Quincy Promes, has been sentenced to six years in prison in absentia for drug trafficking. The Amsterdam District Court ruled that the 32-year-old, who plays in the Russian Premier League for Spartak Moscow, was involved in the import and export of hundreds of kilograms of cocaine in 2020. Promes’s lawyers said the footballer would appeal his sentence. In another case last year, he was sentenced in absentia to 18 months in jail for assault, in connection with a fight in 2020 where he stabbed his cousin in the knee.
