Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with rugby: Toulon will be without legendary All Blacks centre Ma’a Nonu for their Champions Cup quarterfinal clash against Glasgow Warriors on Saturday. The 43-year-old was suspended for three weeks after his yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Wandisile Simelane in their 28-27 victory over the Stormers in the round of 16. Nonu’s suspension was reduced from six to three weeks after he accepted he had committed an act of foul play, and his good disciplinary record. He will be available to play again on April 27.
More rugby news: Veteran forward Courtney Lawes hopes his one-year stint at Sale Sharks will eventually lead to a return to England’s national team. The 37-year-old played the last of his 105 Tests in 2023, when he retired from the international game after the World Cup after also playing in the previous edition in 2019 where they lost to the Springboks in the final. Lawes also represented the British and Irish Lions in five games. He returns to English top-level rugby after two years with French second-tear club Brive.
# Golf: Defending champion Rory McIlroy has been grouped alongside Americans Cameron Young and amateur Mason Howell for the first two rounds of the US Masters which tees off at Augusta in Georgia tomorrow. The Northern Irishman completed the career Grand Slam with last year’s play-off win. World number one Scottie Scheffler of the US will play alongside Scotland’s Bob MacIntyre and compatriot Gary Woodland. Last year’s runner-up, Justin Rose of England, has been grouped with the 2015 champion Jordan Spieth and five-time major winner Brooks Koepka.
Rose meanwhile believes he still has a shot at glory at the age of 45. The Johannesburg-born Englishman’s only major title came at the US Open in 2013 and he also clinched gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, but he has since ended second at three different Masters. Rose clinched his 13th PGA Tour title at Torrey Pines in February and is confident he has what it takes in this year’s Masters.
# And roadrunning: The City Town metro says this weekend’s Two Oceans Marathon is set to host over 30-thousand runners across its flagship events. On Saturday, the ultra marathon will take athletes on its iconic 56-kilometre journey. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith says the route for Sunday’s half marathon over 21.1-kilometre route will take participants through the southern suburbs and culminate at the University of Cape Town’s rugby field:
