Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with golf: Captain Louis Oosthuizen says he is not putting himself or any of his Southern Guards GC teammates under any extra pressure, as LIV Golf comes to South Africa for the first time this week. Over 90-thousand spectators will attend the tournament in Steyn City in Johannesburg from tomorrow until Sunday. The South African contingent of the Southern Guards also consists of Charl Schwartzel, Dean Burmester, and Branden Grace. Oosthuizen says they want to make their home advantage count:
# Rugby: Uncapped prop Carlu Sadie and lock JJ van der Mescht attended a virtual Springbok alignment camp before the start of the Test season. The former Junior Boks both play overseas at the moment – Sadie for Bordeaux Begles in France, and Van der Mescht for Northampton Saints in England. They joined Bok scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies, who last played for South Africa in 2023, as well as other World Cup winners such as Malcolm Marx, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Lood de Jager, Faf de Klerk and Manie Libbok.
More rugby news: Argentina hopes to bring the World Cup to South America for the first time in 2035. It is working with the unions of Brazil, Chile and Uruguay on potentially involving them in the tournament. World Rugby’s CEO, Alan Gilpin, will discuss the idea with the president of Argentina’s governing body, Gabriel Travaglini. Travaglini says they want to deliver a World Cup that reflects the passion and progress rugby has made in the country. Australia is hosting the tournament next year and the US in 2031.
# Soccer: Senegal’s governing body has confirmed it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against African governing body CAF’s decision to revoke their Africa Cup of Nations title. The CAF Appeal Board stripped Senegal of the title for walking off the pitch after Morocco was awarded a late penalty during the final. The penalty was eventually missed, and Senegal won 1-0 in extra time. CAF declared Senegal had forfeited the match. The country has described the decision as unjust.
