# We begin with cricket: South Africa’s historic Test series victory over India has propelled them to second spot in the current World Test Championship standings. The Proteas, who are the defending champions, beat India by 408 runs in the second Test in Guwahati to claim a 2-0 series victory, a first success on Indian soil in 25 years. Australia tops the standings with four victories from four Test, with Sri Lanka third, Pakistan fourth. India has slipped to fifth, with four victories from nine Tests.
Meanwhile, India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, says the final call on his tenure remains with the country’s governing body. South Africa’s victory in the second Test handed India its heaviest defeat ever. It is India’s second home series defeat in two years, after the loss to New Zealand last year. Gambhir says the decisions they took during the series were in the best interest of the team:
More cricket news: A total of 277 players are up for sale in today’s auction for next year’s Women’s Premier League in India. That include 194 local players and 83 from overseas. Among the South Africans in the mix are Proteas captain Laura Wolvaardt, who can expect huge interest following her brilliant performance at the recent one-day World Cup, teammates Tazmin Brits, Lizelle Lee, Ayabonga Khaka, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Anneke Bosch, Chloé Tryon, and Suné Luus, as well as veteran Shabnim Ismael. The tournament starts on the 11th of February.
# Rugby: The United Rugby Championship resumes this weekend with South African franchises diving back into action. The headline fixture is the Jukskei derby, pitting the sixth-placed Bulls against the eighth-placed Lions in Pretoria at two o’clock Saturday afternoon. Top of the log Stormers face their toughest test yet, traveling to Limerick in Ireland to challenge unbeaten Munster at 7.30 that evening. Rounding out the fixtures, the 13th-placed Sharks continue their European tour with a tricky tie against another Irish team, Connacht, in Galway at 9:45.
# And motorsport: Formula One design legend, Adrian Newey, will be Aston Martin’s new team principal from next year. He will combine the job with the managing technical partner role he has held since joining the team in March this year, after 18 years at Red Bull. Andy Cowell, who has spent the last year as team principal and CEO, will become the chief strategy official. Aston Martin says the leadership structure change is designed to focus on Newey and Cowell’s individual strengths and expertise, ensuring organisational efficiency.
