Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with athletics: Tshepo Tshite is through to the men’s 1,500-metre final at the World Championships in Tokyo, becoming the first South African to do so since Johan Cronjé took bronze in Moscow in 2013. Marioné Fourie crashed out of the women’s 100-metre hurdles semifinal. The men’s 110-metre hurdles saw South Africans John Adesola, Mondray Barnard, and Antonio Alkana failing to make it past the first round. In the women’s pole vault qualifying round, Miré Reinstorf and Kyle Rademeyer, and high-jumper Brian Raats failed to clear the bar once.
# Cricket: Proteas Women’s captain Laura Wolvaardt says the one-day international series against Pakistan will be perfect preparation for the upcoming World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. The first of three ODIs gets underway in Lahore this afternoon. South Africa holds a dominant record over Pakistan in ODI, winning 21 of the 28 encounters between the two nations. Wolvaardt says getting to play in the subcontinent before the World Cup is a massive opportunity:
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s governing body asked for the removal of match referee Andy Pycroft after their men’s Asia Cup match against India in Dubai. This follows after the Indian players refused to shake hands after winning by seven wickets. This was the first match between the arch-enemies since the four-day military conflict in May. The chairperson of the Pakistani Cricket Board, Mohsin Naqvi, called it a lack of sportsmanship and says they’ve lodged a complaint against Pycroft at the International Cricket Council for a violation of the code of conduct.
# Golf: Norwegian star Viktor Hovland is set to tee it up in South Africa for the first time when he makes his Nedbank Golf Challenge debut in honour of Gary Player at the Gary Player Country Club from 4 to 7 December. Hovland will make his third consecutive Ryder Cup appearance at Bethpage Black next week, as Team Europe looks to defend the trophy they won two years’ ago. The world number 11 was the first player from Norway to win on both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour.
# And rugby: French flanker Axelle Berthoumieu has been banned for 12 matches after being cited for biting Irish opponent Aiofe Wafer during Sunday’s Women’s World Cup quarterfinal in Exeter, England. The 25-year-old accepted she committed a red-card offence, but will appeal against the length of the ban. The suspension rules Berthoumieu out of the rest of the tournament, including Saturday’s semifinal against England, and ten domestic matches through to March next year. Her appeal will be heard today.
